The Romans 7.5/10

The stories have dated but the regular crew of the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki are superb and one of the best line ups in the series history.
These stories are worth watching for their performances alone.

Enjoyable, but very datedReview date: 2010-05-21 Rating: 6 out of 10I've been watching classic Who and keeping up with the classic DVD releases since about 2007, so I've seen my fair share of good, bad and average Doctor Who stories.
These two are a but strange though.
THE RESCUE
It's only two parts long, and not much really happens in those two parts. Basically, the Doctor, Ian and Barbara land on a deserted planet and rescue a girl named Vicki from a creature named Koquillon. Vicki then fills the Susan=shaped space left over from the previous episode The Dalek Invasion Of Earth. That's all there is to it, really, apart from the second episode ending in a literal "cliffhanger".
THE ROMANS
The main attraction of the box set. Technically speaking, it's actually really awful, but I couldn't help but love every minute! The humour is only funny because it's not funny, and Emperor Nero would fit nicely in a Carry On film. But apart from this, the storyline is good, pretty typical of 60s historical adventures, just with a bit of humour injected to try and liven up the usually dark historic outings.
All in all, they're both very dated but I still enjoyed them. William Hartnell is fantastic, and clearly loving every minute of it, as are his assistants.
It has become clear to me however, that the First Doctor's best stories are all out there on DVD, as I can see that the remaining serials being released are gradually decreasing in quality. However, if anybody has seen the remaining stories not yet on DVD, please tell me your opinions of them in the comments section below! :)
Doesn't yoda laugh like dr whoReview date: 2010-02-13 Rating: 6 out of 10The rescue is a classic dr who type tale and pretty good for that though short. The special effects are, as usual, great to watch. The headline act I suppose is the Romans. Unfortunately it is very old skool dr who. It is pretty good as an educational story and aims at humour which seems pretty dated now. That said, the production values are pretty good thanks to the 1960s BBC. Worth a gander at amazon price. And by the way check out the doctor's laugh. Frank oz may well have been a fan. Oh and the dr is called dr who in the original concept. That's how he's credited.First DoctorReview date: 2009-09-04 Rating: 8 out of 10The quality wasn't that good, but age has to be taken into consideration. The Roman story was rather humourous.Carry On RomeReview date: 2009-08-27 Rating: 4 out of 10The Rescue/The Romans is a bit of a strange combination of Hartnell stories. The Rescue is straight forward enough - the Doctor, Ian and Barbara meet Vicki and save her from Koquillion. That's basically it.
The Romans is ... how do I put it? The only people missing to stop this story becoming a fully fledged "Carry On" film are Sid James and Kenneth Williams. I am sure it has redeeming qualities but I can't think of any. Low brow and unfunny ... at least the cast seemed to be having a jolly old time of it.
