Monty Python's Entire TV Series
Review date: 2010-07-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

Having always been a fan of Monty Python since it first appeared on our TV screens many years ago, I was looking to complement my collection of their films, with the entire TV series. I was not to be disappointed! Firstly on price (brand-new) from Amazon, and the quality of the product itself. As for the humour content? As hilarious as ever, with 7 DVD's worth of laughter, and a very interesting extra DVD on the history of the program, and how it came about. An absolute MUST-HAVE for Python fans! The picture quality was excellent, far better than some of the ageing video-tape copies that I still have.

The pinnacle of British humour in one handy box
Review date: 2010-07-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

It's...

The Box set of The Flying Circus, the clever, funny and downright bizarre show that all other clever, funny or downright bizarre shows aspire to be. To call this the best comedy show ever is an understatement. Without the Pythons, and the brave BBC commissioners who allowed it to air, comedy would not be where it is today.

There is still so much to laugh at in these shows, flowing from Terry Jones' brilliant drag act to Eric Idle's fabulously annoying cockney salesman, from Graham Chapman's often straight-faced-but-tongue-in-cheek hilarity to Michael Palin's sly winks and incredible character acting, from Terry Gilliam's one-of-a-kind animations to John Cleese's anarchic maniac with a knife routine. And although some of their humour was topical, much of it was sheerly based on humanity, and will be relevant for eternity.

This box set will take some time to watch, and at the price, it has a fabulous laugh:pound ratio. Get this if you've got a sense of humour.

And now for something completely different...

Roobe

The Monty Python team were brilliant, there's no doubting that.

This review is not addressing the merrits of the team but the presentation of their series. Unfortunately the BBC have done their classic boob by not only NOT allowing you to 'play all' as most enlightened TV to DVD productions have, but you have to select the first scene of each episode you want to watch as well to watch the episode. As a python sympathiser I find this rigid definition between sketches and episodes slightly ironic.

As I say Python (Monty) Ltd are brilliant, the way their brilliance is presented is, unfortunately, as dated as many of their more old-fashioned sketches have a tendency to be.

I think that a Good and Military way to end my review.

Shame about the sound...
Review date: 2010-07-04 Rating: 6 out of 10

You do not expect pristine quality on archive material like this. But with all the digital sound editors around these days I really do think the publishers could have raised the sound level. In common with that on many DVDs it is far too low, meaning you've to jack the telly way up beyond its usual. Besides, people like I who buy old TV programmes today are not exactly in the first flush of youth and may well have developed various levels of hearing loss - even though they don't know it.

Otherwise this set is good if you missed any of the episodes first time round. Personally I don't find many of the sketches as funny today as I did when they were first broadcast. Some of the humour is very 'sixth-form'. Then again, in 1969 that's where I was. I can recommend this set as a great piece of nostalgia for those who were around at the time and solid study fodder for students of British comedy.

Even better than I remembered!

I saw all of the Monty Pythons when they were first broadcast. About 40 years on, I had forgotten just how good they were. This box set lets the Pythonista wallow in an orgy of fun and silliness. It's great! And it's great value for money.
