Get Some In!
Review date: 2008-11-05 Rating: 10 out of 10

At long last and so much overdue the t.v. series of Get Some In! is now availible. this is great solid comedy. it goes back to britain's national service and four new intakes arrive at RAF Skelton for there national service. here they meet there Corporal named Marsh. superbly acted by Tony Selby who is heartless and cruel with his "Little Erks" as he calls them with other unkind hearted things as well. the lads always seem to get there own back on him however. this is a classic of comedy very enjoyable to watch the series ran for five series the first series also contains a christmas special.I hope the others will also follow suite as this is a unique comedy all brillantly played meet Robert Lindsey who plays Jakey Smith a teddy boy,David Janson who plays a grammer school twit,Gerard Ryder who plays Matthew Lilley, Brian Pettifer who plays Bruce Leckie and Tony Selby who plays there drill instructor or (di) or as he calls it "Devil's Instrument" a very great comedy if you want to see comedy how comedies use to be then watch this series. it is hilarious beautifully acted and presented a throughbred of great comedy now gone from our screens watch this and you won't be disappointed "GET SOME IN"!

A must see for all 1950's RAF recruits
Review date: 2008-10-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

At last 'Get Some In!' is available again. I enlisted in the RAF in 1959, 4 years after the scenario for the series, and things hadn't changed at all. When the series was run on ITV in the mid 70's it brought back such memories and still it does. For those who did not attend such establishments as RAF Bridgnorth, Shropshire, I can assure you that what you see in the DVD is not fiction - it is fact. Been there, got the T-shirt.

I am absolutely certain that the person used to base the character portrayed as Cpl. Marsh was the Cpl. in charge of my flight for the 8 weeks of near hell. I joined as a regular at the time when the last of the NSM (National Service Men) were passing through and I can ensure you that we go no special treatment, with the exception that my uniform was not of the 'hairy' type.

Go on, get a copy and show your children, and their children, what things were really like in a man's world. It never did any of us any harm.

"Fag For The Corporal!"
Review date: 2008-09-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

The writer John Esmonde sadly passed away recently. Along with Bob Larbey, he co-wrote some of the most popular British sitcoms of all time, including 'Please Sir!', 'The Good Life', 'Ever Decreasing Circles', and a few not-so popular but impressive all the same shows such as 'The Other One'.

'Get Some In!' was earmarked for a D.V.D. release last year, but mysteriously failed to appear. Now it has been announced yet again. I very hope it does not vanish a second time.

For the uninitiated, it is set in 50's Britain, as a group of R.A.F. conscripts from all walks of life - teddy boy 'Jakey Smith', vicar's son 'Matthew Lilley', scholar 'Ken Richardson', and Scotsman 'Bruce Leckie' - are put through Hell by the sadistic Corporal Marsh, a man who never needs to buy fags as he simply takes them off his recruits, and is excellently played by Tony Selby.

The show gave Robert Lindsay his first taste of television stardom, two years later he would get his own show - John Sullivan's 'Citizen Smith'. When we first meet Jakey he is all swagger and Brylcreem, supremely confidant that 'the man hasn't been born who can change Jakey Smith'. His arrogance shrinks once he meets Marsh.

I remember watching this in 1975 and cringing at some of the horrific things the conscripts were made to endure - long, tiring cross-country runs, having their boots nailed to the floor ( whilst in them ), and 'jankers' ie. cleaning the latrines. But no matter how bad things got for them they somehow found a way to get their own back. In one episode, when Marsh was stealing coal from the barracks, and leaving the lads to freeze in the middle of winter, Leckie coated the anthracite with the oil used to clean rifles, resulting in Marsh's grate blowing up in his face when he next tried to light a fire. In another, Jakey sawed through one of the supporting posts of Marsh's caravan, and it collapsed when the Corporal got into bed with his wife.

As well as Lindsay and Selby, Gerard Ryder was superb as the timid 'Lilley', as indeed was David Janson ( later to become the second 'Herr Flick' in 'Allo, Allo' ) as 'Ken'.

I can only assume that the reason this has never been repeated is because of Marsh's homophobic and racist attitudes. Ken is not gay, but Marsh treats him as though he is. Leckie is so hurt by Marsh's repeated taunting of his nationality that he contemplates suicide. You have to bear in mind that this was how the R.A.F. was in those days, men like Marsh really did exist and really were that unpleasant, and the writers felt it was their duty to report history the way it happened. It is virtually impossible to imagine this being commissioned today.

'Get Some In!' is long overdue for a D.V.D., release. Today's generation should watch it to realise how truly lucky they are.
