...Nno! Don't go into the swamps!...too late...
Review date: 2008-11-21 Rating: 6 out of 10

Hmm, well I suppose I got what I expected from director Daniel Myrick (The Blair Withch Project), and all the non-famous actors from movies like X-Men and Mean Girls.

Which is a run of the mill teen horror flick. As they always do, a bunch of high schoolers decided to take their summer holidays at a remote lakeside house in the Louisiana swamps (!), only to discover that the dead twin sister of one of their party is trying to make contact. Spook! On the plus side, it veers more towards an old fashioned ghost story than it does psycho killer with kitchen equipment.

There isn't much in the way of plot, although the makers do manage to come up with a decent enough twist at the end. There are also some better than average performances from Elizabeth Harnois, Tyler Hoechlin and Amanda Seyfried, all of whom suggest there is potential beyond their teen cuteness.

Not the greatest thing ever, but a decent enough way to pass a winters evening.

Scary Movie
Review date: 2008-11-09 Rating: 8 out of 10

I didn't know much about this movie when I started watching it. Being a veteran of the Friday The 13th films (I've seen them all) and the Halloween, Exorcist, Omen & Nightmare On Elm Street films, I must say I found this film pretty scary.

It employs plenty of the building blocks of successful scary films - fit women, dumb college guys, a holiday home on a lake, a forest, a creepy neighbour, a stormy night, and cars that break down in times of trouble.

I was trying hard to predict the ending of this film, so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be not so predictable as I thought. Well worth investing 90 minutes of your time I reckon. Watch it in an empty house with the lights off on a windy night like I did, and if you don't jump at least once then you're a better man than I...

Good Horror Movie.

I have seen the The Blair Witch Project a long time ago and now, Dan Myrick returns to the screen with a new horror movie. It's about a young woman who still in mourning of her dead sister, she goes with her friends to summer Solstice to get away from it all but soon her trip will bring back the past with a disturbing thing entering her thoughts and finding some horrfiying things among the way. It isn't the best horror movie I've seen but it's good, lot of jumpy out moments and a terrifying scene of a girl turning into something evil really did scare me. Well worth seeing for a friday night.

Missed Opportunity
Review date: 2008-11-06 Rating: 6 out of 10

What happened with this film...well not much happened in it....but I'm talking about the potential that was wasted when filming it.

To cut this pretty short, this 'horror' film has a distinct lack of horror. It has some interesting ideas going on, and you can clearly see where they wanted to go, but it just never seems to get there.

And what are we left with? A bit of a wishy-washy film that could have been a lot better.

The actors were decent enough, after all this isn't really aimed at the Oscar crowd. Shawn Ashmore does an admirable job (as he usually does in his films).

I don't know how to sum this one up if I'm honest. I suppose missed opportunity would be an adequate summation.

Effective Chiller
Review date: 2008-10-30 Rating: 8 out of 10

Five high school leavers head off to spent summer solstice in a house in the bayou. After dispensing with the usual cliches (Local old man who stares), the kids get down some drinking - except one girl is haunted by the death of her twin sister and some sort of apparition, manifested in the usual way via clanking pipes, slamming doors, and also a very creepy dark shadow. There is, of course, a dark secret.

This was quite effective - the chills occasionally work, and there a few nervy moments. The characters are surprisingly not the typical teen fodder, which is a pleasant change, and perhaps helps.

It won't win any awards for originality - the final "twist" is a bit of a cliche - but it's an entertaining journey and well worth watching on a dark, cold winter night.
