This movie is just great, fantastic acting from both Freeman and Robbins. The transfer to high definition isn't the best, but it is fantastic considering this film is now nearly 15 years old, the grayness and dullness of Shawshank State Prison is seen like live I've seen it before, the dark colors are really clear, however seeing how they didn't have HD cameras back then some of the scenes can look a bit blurry and unclear but most of the time its not very noticeable.
7/10 for audio - Good, but i think it could've been better
8/10 for picture - regarding the films age is good but could be better
9/10 the movie it-self - great, entertaining, with twists and turns
but at times can feel a little bit boring
and simplistic but still fantastic, maybe
one the greatest movies ever made.

Hope springs eternal on blu-ray

This wonderful tale of friendship and hope in the face of brutality and long term incarceration is and will remain a classic piece of cinema. It will be top of many fans blu-ray shopping list if they upgrade to the format. This ITV release pretty much matches the 3-disc DVD release and has over 4 hours of extras including numerous interviews with cast and crew, directors commentary, program features etc.
The 16:9 HD transfer is faultless and brings a sharpness to the bleak colours predominating throughout the feature which only emphasize the austerity of the Shawshank prison environment. The HD audio is clear and sharp and Thomas Newman's score and Morgan Freeman's narrative are both rendered to good effect. I can't help but feel that a special edition will follow at some point with even more extras to offer, but in the meantime Shawshank fans can rest easy that this HD transfer and audio will more than suffice in the meantime.
This release, incidentally, comes in a slimmer than usual blu-ray case. Note to all studio marketing executives: slimmer cases = more shelf space.
