Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the 2008 CGI-animated theatrical film that serves as the kick-off to the weekly animated Clone Wars TV series. The concept came about way back in 1977's original Star Wars film, when Leia says in her message to Obi-Wan Kenobi "Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars." Initially a simple offhand reference that would reveal Luke's past, the phrase captured fans' attentions for years, until Episode II: Attack of the Clones revealed just how the Clone Wars figured into the battle between Republic and Empire.
The 2008 movie is full of familiar characters--Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Count Dooku--and a new one: Ahsoka Tano, a young girl who has been made Anakin's Padawan. Together, the two headstrong youths embark on a mission to rescue Jabba the Hutt's kidnapped child, battling each other as much as they battle the Separatist forces. There are some good sequences, including duels with Dooku and his assassin, Asajj Ventress, and it's interesting to see some new corners of the Star Wars universe, such as the seamy underbelly of Coruscant. But Ahsoka and her penchant for nicknames that are too cute to stomach seem aimed only at tween-age audiences, and for all that goes on in the movie, nothing really happens in the end. The 2003 animated Clone Wars micro-series, which had the advantage of being directly tied into the live-action film series, had much more emotional bite.
At least some familiar voices return: Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO, and still the only actor in every movie), Christopher Lee (Dooku). Other voices include Matt Lanter (Anakin), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), and James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan). But even the traditional opening crawl has been replaced by a narration more suited for Starship Troopers. Veteran Star Wars fans will probably want to see The Clone Wars--once--but it won't take them long to discover that this Star Wars isn't theirs any more. --David Horiuchi

'Clone wars a cartoon was it?'
Review date: 2010-06-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

I was a little concern that it was a cartoon but as soon as it started I forgot it was a cartoon and fully enjoyed it. It makes a great addition to to my Star Wars collection of films. If you are two minds to get it just get it.

Have to say i was a bit sceptical at first, after all this is starwars in cartoon.

But i was pleasantly surprised within moments of watching.

The story is easy to follow and i soon forgot i was watching animation ,well worth a watch and great value for money.

A must have for any starwars fan.

Fantastic

Clone Wars.
Initially I was disappointed with the angular computer graphics. But I quickly forgot because the mood is quite the same as in the real Star Wars movies. It's great with more Star Wars adventures. I have both the Clone Wars movie and TV series because the stories are different.

Excruciatingly dull and awful looking

So disappointed. I bought this for my son. Actually wish I could get a refund.

The visual style appears as if it's meant to fit in with some game concept. Absolutely stiff, wooden and so badly animated it beggars belief. Pixar were doing better character animation than this in 1988.

The story is utterly uninteresting; the characters are as expressive as Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds puppets; the script is infantile and overdone - they speak when it's unnecessary (Blam) "That got him!"; and the voices - my God - the voices! - Annakin has that awful Masters of the Universe, Filmation 'Saturday morning animation' sort of voice.

My son aged 4, who even loves Phantom Menace lost interest in this and started drawing instead for about 30 minutes. He just told me "I did like it - I love all Star Wars films" but it certainly didn't seem to hold his attention much.

Did George Lucas ever even see this? And what's the story with the awful music over the end credits?

I've been told that the series is good. Does it look as wooden and stiff as this?

Good fun

Its a good bit of fun this film but not brilliant. Don't judge the TV series too much from this but watch it first as the series will then make more sense. The TV series is excellent with good graphics, humor, characters and humoour!!!!!
