Brilliant film - shame about the packaging.
Review date: 2008-11-19 Rating: 8 out of 10

I seem to remember that when this was shown on television (in the eighties?) Christine Edzard got a lot of stick for Little Dorrit. Personally I loved it. And now, twenty years later it has lost none of its brilliance. For the film 5 stars.

The packaging leaves much to be desired. For such an important contribution to Dickens on DVD the presentation is shoddy and meagre. The 'extracts of interviews' with the leading players are short and disappointing. For the packaging 0 stars.

What became of Sarah Pickering ?
Review date: 2008-11-11 Rating: 10 out of 10

I know that this isnt a review ( everyone has already said how fabulous this film is ) but I would love to know what happened to the actress that played Little Dorrit , Sarah Pickering .
I believe that this was her first and last acting role !

Great Dickens adaptation, unfortunately, DVD HAS SOMETHING MISSING.......
Review date: 2008-11-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

For those who consider subtitling important, I'm sorry to say that this two-disc, long-awaited DVD realization of Christine Edzard's wonderful film has, disappointment of disappointments, no subtitles or closed captioning.

Although, Special Features can't be beat, containing extracts of early interviews with Sirs Alec Guiness and Derek Jacobi, Cyril Cusack, Joan Greenwood, Miriam Margoyles, Patricia Hayes, lead Sarah Pickering and Max Wall.

Brilliant Production
Review date: 2008-10-31 Rating: 10 out of 10

I need not add to the comments made as to the quality of the film given the superlatives already used.

It is interesting to compare with the new BBC series shown in miserly 30 minute chunks. Having 6 hours in which to immerse oneself makes all the difference.

The transfer of film to DVD is one of the best I have ever seen - the picture is razor sharp - but the cast interviews are showing their age.

A neglected masterpiece
Review date: 2008-10-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

Notwithstanding a stellar cast at their peak, it is the light and magical touch of the director that makes this film, for me, one of the most deeply satisfying I can think of and a glaring omission from the British Film Institute's 100 list (perhaps the judges already have their fill of Dickens? or of Guinness?). A meticulously crafted work of art, it stands repeated viewings.

Comparison with the new and worthy BBC serial of Little Dorrit is revealing. In the one you are conscious of following a plot through a modern production with familiar actors performing well amid convincing period sets. In the other, you are simply immersed in Victorian London, the characters that populate it and the unfolding story. It's as an illustration is to a Rembrandt.

If nothing has been lost in the transfer (which I can't yet verify), the DVD of Christine Edzard's masterful film will be a real treasure.
