Amazon.co.uk Review

A staple diet of the television schedules, travel documentaries in the company of famous names are clearly nothing new. But do consider making some time for Stephen Fry’s incredibly infectious trip around the United States, as Stephen Fry In America easily makes space for itself in a very crowded genre.

Traveling with the company of his black cab, Stephen Fry In America sees him covering the many States of America, on a mission to get some kind of flavour of US life. His journey takes him on one hand to making his own ice cream, through to spending time with hunters, the Amish community and Navajo Indians and plenty more besides. It’s a breathtakingly broad snapshot, and clearly a fascinating journey.

What really lifts Stephen Fry In America, however, is the joyful intrigue of our tour guide. Fry is an ideal choice for a project such as this, with his mix of intelligence, humour and genuine interest in the subject matter simply hard to resist. By turns fascinating and very funny, it’s a wonderful adventure, and one that always make sure to engage the viewer. Here’s hoping Mr Fry gets a few more stamps in his passport in the years ahead… --Jon Foster

I can't discuss the quality of the show as it will not play for me. I knew it was a risk but wanted other North American buyers to know.

He is an expert on staying away from all kind of clichés. I have learnt so many interesting stuff about America which I had many prejudices.

A bit bland, if you ask me...

I love Stephen Fry. I enjoy his wit, his insight and his charm. What I like most is the balance he is so often able to strike between a kind of twee old world grace/dignity and a dangerous, sharp cynicism. I will watch, read and listen to something just because he is in it.
The problem with SFIA is it's very heavy on the twee but light on the sharpness. These bland postcards offer very little insight and present very little that hasn't already been done. Do we need another Alan Wicker-esque view from abroad?

I didn't expect a sneering attack of America and her people but Miami seemed the only place Fry was prepared to lambast and that was done in passing and without any qualification. It seems as if the programme wilfully sought to present the shiniest images - even when he met the homless people in St. Louis there was an odd politeness to it all which just created distance from the real situation. I have no idea what point Fry was trying to make.

All in all I found very little interesting or surprising about this series. And Fry's usual wit and charm invariably gave way to the awkward politeness of an upper class Englishman abroad.

VERY light entertainment, I'm afraid.

This dvd is a quick look at some of the travels of Steven Fry,good to view but lacks a more in depth look at all the places he visits, you tend to feel that you have been rushed through, rather than visited the place, feel that more imformation could have been inserted on each place and State, making it even more entertaining.
