In the 1970s, US television did something very well, and that was to make entertaining crime dramas. No coincidence therefore that, during this period and for the first five years of its lifespan, Hawaii 5-0 continually improved season upon season. Here, with this season 4 release we're nearing the stage where the show was rapidly reaching its peak. Arguably, this is the finest season in the programme's twelve year run - although for me, I must admit, season 5 narrowly wins that accolade. However, of the seasons released on DVD thus far, these episodes are in a different league to its predecessors. Don't buy these DVDS if you're expecting or wanting a gritty realistic police show, because frankly, these stories are way too outlandish to be taken seriously - although this is not a criticism, in actual fact, this is why the show works so well. For escapism and entertainment, 90% of the episodes contained on these discs rate at least 8/10 - even the weaker episodes score highly because the production values were so high. Quality of the episodes on this actual release is, once more, very high - however, it would have been nice for both a stereo or 5.1 soundtrack to have been included and some more extras above and over the standard episodic teasers. As for the show itself, at this time, circa 1972, the program had a certain zing to it - the ratings for season 4 increased from that of season 3 ensuring the show attained a position of 12th overall. This would be improved upon during season 5 when the show became America's highest rated drama of 1973 - recognised with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.
