About Time!
Review date: 2008-06-15 Rating: 10 out of 10
Quite simply this is the funniest sitcom ever made (although I wouldn't attempt to argue with those who'd choose Fawlty Towers).
The main focus of the series is television advertisements and writers Marshall and Renwick and director Marcus Mortimer give us many parodies as well-observed and scathing as their satirisations of other T.V. genres were in their previous collaboration Alexei Sayle's Stuff.
At the time of writing Renwick had already written several series of One Foot In The Grave and Gordon, played by Ade Edmondson, is in effect a 40 year old Meldrew. Almost all his lines one could imagine coming from Victor as he expresses his frustration at such irritations as unwanted free newspapers, insurance companies and the little T-shaped bits of plastic that come with new shirts.
If You See God...is one of those very rare sitcoms that is of the highest standard throughout. Not once does the comedy flag and the continual laughs come from character, situation and dialogue simultaneously.
As one would expect from Renwick there is never a happy ending. The first episode ends with a cry of frustration from Gordon that brings to mind Reggie Perrin, and the conclusion to the final episode is as bleak as they come.
An absolute must.
