Don't bother
Review date: 2008-09-03 Rating: 2 out of 10

This is the first Blu-ray disc that I buy that is a disappointment. In the best scenes the image is only marginally better than on a good DVD and at its worst the image is so soft and lacking detail that it looks blured. I've seen average DVDs with much better average quality than this. Since I didn't have a DVD version of this specific film I can't compare it to previous DVD releases, but I doubt this is the best that can be done from a good master of the film.

If you have a previous DVD release, don't bother wasting your money in this release, unless your version is atrociously bad. But then again, there are some atrociously bad scenes in this version too.

Audio and subtitle options
Review date: 2008-08-09 Rating: 8 out of 10

While this Blu-ray of an almost 30 year old film may not stand up to today's movie releases, it is still a nice upgrade over my old DVD. If you consider buying this disk, here's a summary of the different audio/subtitle options you may choose from.

Upon inserting the disk you are prompted to select a country from a list of 11 (you may choose any). After that, the movie will play with the following audio/subtitle combination (with the exception of Deutschland, France, and the UK there are no further audio/subtitle options once you selected a country):

1. Australia: English DTS-HD 5.1, no subtitles
2. Danmark: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Danish subtitles (forced)
3. Deutschland: Deutsch DTS-HD 5.1, ohne Untertitel - ODER - Englisch DTS-HD 5.1, deutsch untertitelt (nicht ausblendbar)
4. France: Français DTS-HD 5.1, sans sous-titre - OU - Anglais DTS-HD 5.1, sous-titré en français (non amovible)
5. México: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Spanish subtitles (forced)
6. Nederland: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Dutch subtitles (forced)
7. Norge: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Norwegian subtitles (forced)
8. Portugal: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Portuguese subtitles (forced)
9. Suomi: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Finnish subtitles (forced)
10. Sverige: English DTS-HD 5.1 with Swedish subtitles (forced)
11. United Kingdom: English DTS-HD 5.1, no subtitles - OR - English DTS-HD 5.1 with English subtitles (forced)

If you are not satisfied with your audio/subtitle combination, then you have to go back to the entry page and select a different country.

Great Film, Dissapointing Edition and no DOLBY 5.1 SOUND!
Review date: 2008-08-05 Rating: 6 out of 10

With eager anticipation I popped this Blu Ray into my PS3 only to face a couple of dissapointments. Firstly, the picture quality isn't up to much on the night time scenes, though with daylight things improve. There isn't much detail or depth. However, it IS better than the DVD release and so is still worth the upgrade for real lovers of the film.

The big hassle is its lack of any other 5.1 track other than DTS HD High Resolution. Meaning my old creaking reciever couldnt decode it! Why couldn't they have added a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix like everybody else does? So instead, I was stuck with watching it on Dolby Pro Logic. Add to this a COMPLETE lack of extras and you could end up very dissapointed with this realease. However, the quality of the story and film, and the admitted increase in picture quality, while not jaw dropping by any stretch, makes it still a worthwhile buy for the Carpenter fan.

The Fog
Review date: 2008-07-29 Rating: 6 out of 10

Made during John Carpenters most productive period The Fog was made after the seminal Halloween and was followed by Escape From New York and The Thing. While it may not reach the heights of those genre classics,The Fog remains a spooky and effective little ghost story. The film contains many Carpenter trademarks such as a sparse,self-composed electronic score and atmospheric widescreen camerawork. If you like to watch a good old-fashioned ghost story on a dark stormy night give The Fog a try.
