I love this movie, it's not perfect but a great sunday afternoon film. Sid James, Kenneth Connor, Shirley Eaton - yum. Unfortunately the DVD is fairly poor and appears to be mastered from an old TV transfer. I'm sure that terrestrial TV has shown a better version in recent years.

Confusing But Still Great

This is a pretty good film in some ways but in others it's confusing.
The back of the box tells you that Uncle Gabriel has died and for Ernie to inherit he must spend the night in the family home.
But this is all wrong, at the reading of the will Ernie gets nothing and he must stay in the family home as it's in the middle of nowhere and there's no trains or transport home till the morning. Then the Murders start. It's a bit like a dry run for an early Carry On Film, as it starts serious, very much like an Agatha Christe thriller, but then Kenneth Conner over acts (as usual) in it. Sid James just plays his usual self (here called 'Honest Sid') and Shirley Eaton just wanders about, I won't mention how bad Dennis Price is.
The underated (and talented) Donald Pleasance has a beard but looks exactly like he did 20 years later. Another point is there are no end credits so you can't check on who played who. As I said it looks great, this is proberbly due to it been the last film produced by the partnership of Robert S. Baker and Monty Berman who moved over to television after this to make 'The Saint' with Roger Moore. If you don't analise too much, it's fun to watch and is over in just over an hour and twenty minutes. A footnote to add is that 60's singer Adam faith apears at the end of the film in a bit-part/cameo as Shirley Eaton's boyfriend, but as it was early in his acting career he's not as good as he was in the later 'Budgie'
