Beautiful Tribute
Review date: 2008-11-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

I've been listening to the album for a couple of days now and it just gets better everytime. I love stripped down well recorded work like this and I knew I would not be disappointed knowing Lofgren (Hi NILS!) was doing this. Great musician and wonderful work all round. Neil's old Martin as well as the heirloom piano fit beautifully!
Love ya Nils, Love ya Neil and 'Long May You Boys Run'...

Very splendid piece of work
Review date: 2008-08-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

I cannot improve on some of the comments already made. This is a very pleasing piece of work -thoughtful, engaging and unpretentious. I take my hat off to him - this is the same man whose frenetic electric guitar solo on "Because the Night" in his Springsteen and the E-Street Band role is up the with the best. To go from that superlativee stadium rock to this exquisite collection deserves a lot of credit

Sensitive and Intimate
Review date: 2008-06-22 Rating: 10 out of 10

The moment I heard that Nils had released a Neil Young tribute album, I knew he wouldn't go wrong. Not only as a result of their shared history, but Nils is such a fine accoustic performer that I knew this material would be in safe hands. What I hadn't appreciated is how much Nils sounds like Neil Young, and his voice is well suited to these sparse recordings. Each song is accompanied by just piano or guitar, resulting in a very intimate recording, each song beautifully sung. The selection of tracks is varied, with some familiar and some less so material. So if you're an admirer of these two artists, then it's every bit as good as you'd wish.

The perfect marriage
Review date: 2008-06-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

Nils Lofgren and Neil Young go back a long, long way, and Nils has contributed to many of Neil's great moments over the years. So this is not the average tribute album, and it is full of very much not-average performances. Nils' voice is not dissimilar in pitch to the legend that is Neil, and this gives his vocals here a slightly eerie echo of their writer and his unique singing style. All of the songs are played straight by Nils alone, on guitar and piano. Even the guitar was a gift from Neil way back in 1970, and the piano is an emotion-drenched family heirloom belonging to Nils' wife.

So these performances are invested with years of life and love, and Lofgren delivers - ironically, bearing in mind his own song-writing talents - probably one of the very best recordings of his long career. Apparently it was recorded mostly at Nils' home. It's hard to pick highlights from such an illustrious list of songs, so I won't bother. But the quality of Neil's songs shines through, beautifully accented with care and skill by Lofgren's always wonderful guitar and piano playing.

A wonderful CD, low key but gorgeous, a heartfelt tribute from one legend to another.

I look forward to Nils sings Bruce! Now that could be wonderful as well.

NILS STRIPPED TO THE BARE ESSENTIALS
Review date: 2008-06-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

Taking into account the history of Nils involvement with Neil Young this is a fine tribute. To enjoy this record you have to imagine this is Nils playing in your front room with either piano or guitar and just to you, thats how stripped down this is. As a guitarist he is up there with the best, but this cd shows another side to the magic of Nils Lofgren.Buy and enjoy!
