Science Fiction films Prior to Star Wars looked different.
The future had massive computers with big flashing lights on them. People wore futuristic jumpsuits and pumps.
Step in Logan's Run one of the finest films ever. The costumes and acting are pretty cheesy. The robots, special effects are terrible and some of the models to show the sprawling city are what you would expect from an after school model club.
Who cares the story is fantastic (read the book also it's a classic and far more in depth)
And everything about the films sets off perfectly against everything else.
I guess first time watchers who like films with CGI and massive budgets may struggle to see what us dudes who watched it over 20 years ago like about it but, give it a go.
Anyone who is thinking of taking a trip down memory land, go for it.
5 stars
MEGA FOX Jenny Agutter is in it also! What more reasons do you need!

Not the full picture?Review date: 2008-09-29 Rating: 6 out of 10According to the packaging and the trailer on Amazon, the widescreen ratio is 1:85. If so, it's not the full widescreen version and material is missing from each frame.
The film was shot in 2.35 widescreen, and that's the width of frame that was used in the vhs release.
If the picture has been cropped to 1:85 for this dvd release, then viewers are not getting the full impact of the impressive set designs which are so much a part of this film's success.
Great sci-fi movie, and well worth a look, but fans are being shortchanged with the picture.A Science-Fiction classic on DVD at lastReview date: 2008-09-27 Rating: 10 out of 10My old VHS tape can now rest in peace, at last we have a widescreen DVD version of Logan's Run with remastered sound.
It's one of my favourite movies of all time. It has a great fast moving story, lots of beautiful people intent on living their alloted 30 years to the full but living alongside a darker underclass, the cubs, and an underground movement that helps "runners" try and find Sanctuary. The special effects are great and won a Special Achievement Award at the 1977 Oscar's and Jerry Goldsmith's music, a mix of orchestral and electronic is superb, I have the OST on vinyl' and to top all that off it has Jenny Agutter.
I agree that the effects do look dated now but bear in mind that at the time their use of lasers was ground breaking. I saw it when it first came out and have watched it countless times since and it has never lost its appeal to me.
On the extras front the commentary by Michael York (Logan), director Michael Anderson and Bill Thomas the costume designer is very informative, the costumes played an important role in portraying a society where pleasure appears to be the sole purpose. The featurette on the making of the movie has a quite grainy quality to it but still gives a reasonable deal of information and is a nice addition.
Now how about someone releasing the Logan's Run TV series with Heather Menzies?
Classic Sci-Fi at last on Widescreen R2Review date: 2008-09-22 Rating: 10 out of 10Well it's about time this surfaced on R2 DVD. This is a classic family sci-fi film (for the over 12's) that given its age (1976) still makes for a highly enjoyable watch. What to do with the over-30's in an overcrowded bubble dwelling population in a post-apocalyptic world run by servo-computers? Simple - send 'em up in a spiralling carrousel on their 30th birthday, blow them to pieces and kid the remaining population that they can be renewed. Sounds like a daft plot, but are we not living in our own blinkered bubble with an ever increasing, ageing population? Anyone looking for another way out (the 'runners') can expect to be similarly blasted away by the 'Sandmen', guardians of this closeted, hedonistic society. Richard Jordan and Michael York play two sandmen buddies. York (Logan 5) is 'aged' to masquerade as a runner and seek out missing runners who seem to have escaped to 'sanctuary', but soon finds himself running for his own life together with Jessica (Jenny Agutter at her beautiful best) pursued by Jordan into the outside world (a truly inspired sequence in the movie) where they have a surprising encounter. Cue an excellent appearance and performance by Peter Ustinov. Yes, its got laser guns, wacky robots, daft costumery etc but it is beautifully filmed, very clever in parts and well paced - and its great fun too! This Warner release has a very good widescreen print and audio given the age of the film. Extras include a commentary by York and the director and a remastered featurette. A good story, well-told with effects that won an Academy Award in their day and which don't look too dated today.Great Sci-FiReview date: 2008-09-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
This film is brilliant. A very original storyline which is both intriguing and engrossing!
Set in the distant future the remains of humanity live within the confines of huge domes (they look similar to the Eden project in Cornwall!) because of years of war, overpopulation and pollution no-one can survive outside of these domes...or so they are told.
No-one within the domes is permitted to live beyond the age of 30, this is in order to prevent overpopulation from happening again. Once a person reaches 30 they are forced to take part in the 'carousel' which 'renews' people who are then reborn (the reality is that they are killed)
Special police units known as 'Sandmen' patrol the domes searching for 'runners' (people who have reached 30 and refuse to take part in carousel) Logan 5 is one such Sandman who is selected for a secret mission to find a place called 'sanctuary'
I won't say any more than that so I won't spoil the film for others but its got alot of twists in the story.
Does this film look dated? Yes. Are the costumes cheesy? Definately! But I don't feel it spoils the film at all. Focus on the story and the acting and I promise you will enjoy it! My wife hates Sci-fi and even she admitted that she enjoyed the film.
The acting is very good, the characters are interesting enough that you actually care what happens to them and considering how old it is I think the special effects are impressive...I can't wait to order the region 2 DVD!
