Amazon.co.uk Review

Rec starts with a good, solid, straightforward idea. Its plan? To focus us on TV reporters, who are following a group of firemen as they go about their shift. Said shift, however, doesn’t quite go to plan, as what starts as a seemingly standard rescue mission soon takes a disturbing, chilling turn, and this sets the scene for a very effective horror film.

One of the reasons why Rec works so well is the manner in which it’s shot. It’s not the first film to adopt the handheld shooting style, and indeed there have been many clichéd attempts to follow the success of The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield. Yet the style suits Rec well, with the photography less a gimmick, and more a legitimate storytelling device.

It’s fair to say that Rec is a dish best served cold, so it’d be unfair to expand on the plot. However, be in no doubt that the mix of psychological creepiness and outright horror is very good, making the most of the claustrophobic surroundings, and wisely sidestepping many of the pitfalls of the genre. It has one or two problems, but it’s hard to quibble too much when the main feature works as well as this low-key, yet ultra-effective film does. --Jon Foster

Avoid usa rip off and watch this!

Forget Quarantine, the Usa remake. This movie is the original and best version in my opinion. Truly terrifying and fast paced. I must have watched it 5 times since I bought it. I recommended it to all my friends and every one of them thought it was brilliant. The hand held camera work is handled very well too. One of my faves.10/10

Beware not in English

I love a good horror film but to my disapointment when i put this on i realised it was subtitled. My fault, should have checked. If you don't mind subtitles (or understand spanish)it may be fine but i managed about half an hour that was pretty boring to start but maybe it gets better!
Whereas for me find it difficult to concentrate on a film when im having to read the subtitles.
One for the car boot im afraid.

Shame about the film being Spanish with English subtitles, but pretty scary and well made budget film, just ordered Rec 2

Almost unwatchable shaky-cam zombie flick
Review date: 2010-05-12 Rating: 4 out of 10

**** warning spoilers ****

OK so we all know that Rec is Blair Witch meets 28 Days Later with a hefty dollop of Dawn of the Dead and Cloverfield mixed in, but does it add anything to this overused genre? Well I'm not convinced.

Let's start with the shaky-cam effect. It is SERIOUSLY (and I mean nausea-inducingly) shaky in Rec. Yes, we have the only professional cameraman on Earth whose equipment does not possess an image-stabilising system! I for one found many scenes difficult to watch for this reason. There's some strobe lighting as well, just to add to the viewers' discomfort and irritation. Then we have lots of fairly comedic violence - the fireman whacking a zombie in the face with a fire extinguisher accompanied by 'bong!' sounds, was a real laugh-out-loud moment (well there was no laughter track so I thought I'd better add my own). Wouldn't a frying pan or chamber pot have worked better? We have several chase scenes and "oh I think we're safe here - AARRG! There's a zombie!" moments during which I half expected the Benny Hill theme to be played. We have an annoyingly shrill and rather unconvincing lead lady reporter who you will want to become zombie-kill after a matter of minutes. We have a few clumsily-telegraphed shocks; I mean did anyone really not know the little girl would snarl and attack when the camera slowly zoomed in on her, or for there to be something nasty in the attic as the view slowly turned full circle? We also have plot-holes and inconsistencies aplenty; these zombies are supposed to be mindlessly aggressive (just like in 28 Days Later), so how could the rabid boy patiently plot the ambush in the attic or the girl at the end get out of the locked room? In fact how could an old tape-recorder work when the electricity had just been turned off? Not to mention that tape recorders do not make that twittering noise when you rewind them - and are extremely unlikely to stop at exactly the key points in the recording when fast-forwarded and played randomly. And can you really believe that the religious nutter was conducting experiments on a young woman in an apartment without any of the residents hearing anything? I could go on, but I'm sure you get the gist. BTW, as my Spanish is reasonable, the subtitles did not bother me, but the majority of viewers who are obliged to refer to them may miss some of the action.

To summarise, Rec is just about saved from being a lone-star movie by the evocative backdrop of the dreary apartment block with the spiral staircase (perfect for zombies!) and the genuinely creepy appearance of the ghoulishly emaciated woman at the end. If you leave your brain at home and don't mind a little motion-sickness, it just about ticks the right boxes but, on the whole, this is blatantly unoriginal and formulaic and there are far better zombie-flicks out there. Apparently a sequel is in the making. They really shouldn't have bothered.
