Christian Slater Is Still Hot!
Review date: 2008-11-30 Rating: 6 out of 10

Bob (Christian Slater) is a middle-aged guy, stuck in a mundane job he hates with people he dispises. One day a co-worker of his comes to work & has a shoot out. Bob is spared, maybe because his vengful colleague related to Bob (Bob had the same intentions) When his colleague turns his gun on Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert) Bob shoots him before he kills her with a few more gun-shots.
Vanessa is paralysed from the neck down & when visited in hospital by Bob she is hostile & ungreatful. Understandably she wishes she were dead. The next time he visits her she appologises & he takes her home with him & he becomes her carer. A love story then ensues.

I liked 'He Was A Quiet Man' for its individuality & poignancy. I was personally rooting for the average-Joe Bob, with his super hot paralysed girlfriend. I personally found Christian Slater very attractive, in the film he has a receeding hairline & a mustache, so what? So I pretty much watched the film thinking; 'yeah, I still wouldn't kick him out of bed even if his hair style is like my dad's'.
The movie is pretty bleak & depressive when thought about deeply, the disatisfaction with mediocracy & mundanity are all too apparent in Bob's life & Vanessa coming a part of it seems to save him, make him appreciate the little significant moments in life.

William. H. Macy is good as Bob's former nasty boss. Slater gives a stellar performance, but isn't entirely believeable as the opressed new-to-love Bob (probably because in my opinion Slater is always attractive.)
I haven't got much to say about Elisha Cuthbert, she is attractive & seems to love Bob which makes her adequate, but there's no real character development on her part.
A decent film but the ending did disappoint me, I hoped for prosperity & happiness for poor Bob but it just didn't happen, I will say one thing about the ending, it did come totally out of nowhere & I really wasn't expecting it! Unfortunately I found the film forgettable, it took me a while to remember I had actually watched it to bother reviewing it in the first place.
In conclusion I would recommend this film to people who are open to films that make you come out of them wanting to slit your wrists (its not always a bad thing, I came out of 'Atonement' very down & suicidal, but I still liked it.)
I wouldn't advise anyone to buy this film, but just to rent it, or watch it on TV.
If Christian Slater happens to read this review, look me up, you're still hot after all these years!

Interesting but derivative
Review date: 2008-11-04 Rating: 6 out of 10

It's about the oppressed office worker, seething inside. It uses a lot of visual tricks but without developing a distinctive style. Almost everything in it reminded me of other films: "Stalking Laura", "Fight Club", "Falling Down", "Arlington Road", "The Assassination of Richard Nixon", "The Hudsucker Proxy" - it even stole the tumbling rolled-up newspaper from "Blood Simple".

It's interesting enough, occasionally clever and surprising, and doesn't outstay its welcome, but ultimately it has nothing to say that hasn't been said many times before, and better.

Flashy but left me empty

I have mixed feelings about this film. Overall, style triumphs over substance but there are some genuinely moving and original cinematic moments. The director uses just about every visual trick in the book to hook the viewer in . Timelapse, talking fish, CGI explosions, surreal dream sequences - they're all present in this quirky tale of a loner turned hero. .However, the eye candy and heavy use of orchestrated music fail to cover up the cracks in the overall narrative and weak script. Christian Slater is initially credible as the office nerd, but ultimately he's too good looking to pull it off for the whole movie - not quite method enough to convince. The other cast members are weakly fleshed out and there's not one single likeable character in this movie. The movie is worth watching for the curiosity factor - it reminded me of a Michel Gondry/ Aronofsky film but with less substance. A good movie concept but slightly overblown for my tastes.

Recommended!!

An excellent film, well-acted, good script and a superb performance by Christian Slater. An unusual film with plenty of surprises and a good story I would not be a quiet man in highly recommend this film!! Loudly -its great!!

Slater's best in a long while

So good to see Christian Slater in a good role again. Frank Capello's film is funny and disturbing in equal measures. Probably not to everyones taste (particularly the ending), but the beauty of He Was A Quiet Man is it's continuous surprises, never following down the route the viewer is used to in a standard Hollywood flick. Great support from Elisha Cuthbert and William H Macy. This is a fine example of a film that didn't set out to tick all the boxes, but instead set out to tell an interesting story.
