Amazon.co.uk Review

Dr. Seuss's classic 1954 book Horton Hears a Who has entertained generations of children and served as the inspiration for a 26-minute, 1970 television special Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who and the 2000 Broadway musical "Seussical: The Musical". This 2008, full-length animated movie features the voice talents of Jim Carrey as Horton, Steve Carrell as the Mayor of Whoville, Carol Burnett as the Kangaroo, and Jesse McCartney as JoJo and promises to delight a whole new generation of children and their parents and grandparents. The technological wonders of computer animation have allowed 20th Century Fox Animation to bring to life the wacky, colourful Whoville with its minute inhabitants and the lush Jungle of Nool with its host of distinctive animals and the result is a rich, fantastical world of wonder worthy of Dr. Seuss' own imagination.

All the major plot elements of Dr. Seuss' book are present, with Horton hearing the faint cry for help from a tiny dust speck atop a small clover and doing his best to protect the inhabitants of that small civilization of Whoville despite the disbelief, disdain, and persecution of his fellow animals. The feel of Dr. Seuss' original rhyming prose is partially preserved in the sparse narration by Charles Osgood that's interspersed throughout the film's dialogue and the overarching themes of staying true to one's convictions and the celebration of the power of perseverance, imagination, and kindness come through loud and clear. Horton Hears a Who is a fun rendering of a classic Dr. Seuss story that's sure to entertain viewers of all ages. --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Simply wonderful

I am not usually a fan of animations but watched this for review purposes for a website. It is absolutely fantastic. Beautifully animated, perfectly cast and hilarious and touching in equal measure, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Colourful and fun for small children
Review date: 2008-11-03 Rating: 6 out of 10

"Horton" is a visually striking film - very colourful with plenty of slapstick humour to keep the kids amused - and the under 10's will probably enjoy this film most. There are one or two jokes in here for adults, but the lack of any real plot will mean your attention soon starts to drift. Mercifully it's a short film. Fine for what it is - a diversion for kids - certainly not a classic.

Visually striking Dr Seuss adaptation
Review date: 2008-11-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film tells the story of what happens when Horton the Elephant discovers there is an entire world contained in a speck on a bit of clover. Whilst the plot is squarely aimed at kids, there is much to recommend this to viewers of all ages; anyone who likes the books of Dr Seuss and/or decent animation should enjoy this film.
Visually, it manages to capture Seuss's style really well; the microscopic world of the Whos is especially entertaining and there are a great many incredibly detailed and inventive scenes that will amuse children and adults alike.
Whilst there are plenty of kids films that represent pure torture for grown-ups, this isn't one of them. It made me laugh as well as my kids so scores points for that. Jim Carrey isn't everyone's cup of tea either, but his vocal performance in this is fairly understated so shouldn't prove too annoying.
Overall, I'd say this is top notch family entertainment that has superb animation; I may not want to rewatch it quite as much as my kids will, but it's well worth a look.

OMG SO BAD

Seriously, this is one of the worst films i have ever seen!
I was literally falling asleep while watching this "comedic" film. I'm suprised Jim Carrey signed up to be part of this film. I would only recommend "Horton Hears A Who" to masochists!

"A person is a person, no matter how small."

This isn't my favourite animated childrens film, and to be honest - in places it labours a bit. But the strength of this film lays in the unique concept of the story, a whole world existing on a speck of dust.

Jim Carrey voices Horton the Elephant with all the energy you expect from him, but without going over the top. Most of the humour comes from him, and the one liners which relate more to the parents than the kids watching. The world of the Whos also follows the adult orientated humour as we follow the life of the mayor who juggles his work and fatherly duties.

The ending was predictable, but it still managed to keep an 'edge of the seat' tense atmosphere. The treatment and bullying of Horton in one scene towards the end was quite difficult to watch though and felt a bit out of kilter with the rest of the film - it turned a bit 'Lord of The Flies'!

In a nutshell: The Doctor Seuss story has been brought bang up to date without losing any of the original charm. The production team have previously produced animation which seemed as though it lagged behind that of Disney Pixar, but here it is top notch and it is clear that they have come on in leaps and bounds. This won't go down as an all-time-great, but my children did enjoy it, and I suppose the film does introduce young 'uns to a touch of philosophy (what the world we live on is but a tiny speck existing in a another much larger world...?), and the central message is a nice one without being presented in too cheesy a way.
