Enjoyable but not exceptional

Though not really a patch on the South Korean original whose plot it follows very closely this is a mildly amusing rom-com that will kill 90 minutes of boredom when you've got nothing better to do.
Jesse Bradford plays Charlie Bellow as much more of a straight arrow than Chun Tae-Hyun plays Gyeon-woo who came across as a likeable but workshy waster, Elisha Cuthbert plays Jordan Rourk the female lead who acquires a name in this version (in the original film the Girl's name is never mentioned onscreen). Cuthbert shows yet again why she keeps winning a place in various lists of the world's hottest women, she is indeed gorgeous but she's not a great actress and doesn't manage the mixture of homicidal madness, wild-eyed energy and heart-broken despair that Jun Ji-hyun portrayed so brilliantly in the original film.
At an hour shorter this version misses out a lot of the original film such as Gyeon-woo's regular trips to the police station after the Girl keeps getting him arrested or (all but one abbreviated scene of) the Girl's wild flights of fantasy as she forces Gyeon-woo to read her atrocious film scripts. This is both a good and a bad thing as the American film moves the story along faster with less diversion but then some of the funniest bits of the original are in the missing scenes.
The ending is basically the same albeit a bit more condensed though the trick with the old man doesn't work anywhere near as well in this version.
By far the best performance in this film was by Austin Basis as Bellow's roommate (a character not in the original, Gyeon-woo lived with his parents) the scene at the beginning with the female joggers was the one point I laughed out loud.
One last point is that Gyeon-woo the engineering student was turned into Charlie Bellows the business student, a comment on 2008 America perhaps?

Not a terrible remake but lacks for so many reasons...Review date: 2008-10-21 Rating: 6 out of 10I was very apprehensive going into this film for a few reasons; mainly, My Sassy Girl, the original Korean Film is one of my favourite movies ever (it is criminally unavailable in the UK and I overwhelming advise anyone to buy it off eBay region free) and that the US remake looked just too "romantic" - I'm not dead against remakes, I much prefer Wicker Park, a remake of L'Appartment but some are just plain tripe.
My Sassy Girl with Elisha Cuthbert is probably somewhere in the middle, in comparison to the Korean original, this remake is some 60 minutes shorter and whilst this may help the American cinema going public, in my opinion it detracts from the overall feeling that the original created, but trying to detach from that and judging the US version as a film in it's own right - you can't help feeling that the movie just moves along too quickly, you've no time to get accustomed to the characters nor follow the zany plot completely - there are a couple of WTF moments in this movie where the writers have tried to be faithful to the original by using two minutes of a ten minute scene and it just doesn't work - without ruining it for anyone, I'm primarily thinking of the fairground scene here. Unfortunately, the US remake makes My Sassy Girl change from a highly original zany comedy into a run of the mill Rom-Com.
Watching the scenes `borrowed' from the original you get the same feeling I've previously mentioned, they are there but done worse, generally shorter and which consequently means a loss of the feelings gained.
I tried not to do a comparative review but failed somewhat! I think the main reason for that is the remake fails as to add anything to the original but loses so much, my recommendation is to watch this if you must, maybe you'd be less opinionated as I, but to track down the original which is just so much better.
an interesting take on the rom com Review date: 2008-09-12 Rating: 8 out of 10This is quite a zany journey that twists and turns and keeps you wondering "whatever next!"
Elisha Cuthbert for the majority of the film is annoying in the extreme, beautiful but annoying.
So much so that at times you cannot understand why the film lasted more that 15 mins and why he didnt actually help her fall on to the train tracks.
As the tale unfolds however it ends up leaving you in a good place mentally.
Ok so the plot is slighty implausible and a bit weird, full of holes and unrealistic but hey, let the imagination run free and you will enjoy this film.
