A real edge of the eighties at last!
Review date: 2008-04-25 Rating: 10 out of 10
Hurray for a brave compilation that celebrates the side of the eighties that doesn't focus on Spandau, Duran etc,
It is a well put together and focussed collection done by someone with a fondness for nostalgis that doesn't get overwritten by sentimentallity.
Excellent!

Not quite what it saysReview date: 2008-04-18 Rating: 8 out of 10Although undoubtedly the best compilation of eighties music I've ever found, the track lisitings are not the same as Amazon state.
On disc 1, we have no Haircut 100, but instead Marilyn's "Calling Your Name" - I suppose Marilyn was typical of the eighties scene, but he was also a pretty lame one-hit wonder. Still, Haircut 100 turn up on Disc 2. Unfortunately, the Cocteau Twins do not - a great shame, as "Pearly Dew Drops Drops" is one of their best. Also, there is no SPK on Disc 2, but there is Aztec Camera's "Oblivious" - perfect eighties pop. And on Disc 3, we have no Scritti Politti or Talk Talk, but instead have Teardrop Explodes' "Passionate Friend" and Altered Images' "See Those Eyes".
So, a few disappointments, so be aware. Having said that, whoever chose some of these tracks is a genius - The Thompson Twins' "In The Name of Love" - the best song they ever wrote; ditto Pychedelic Furs "Love My Way"; The Lotus Eaters; Furniture; Our Daughter's Wedding - all fantastic songs that I thought I'd lost forever when my vinyl collection finally disappeared. A few glaring errors? Well, where is Martha and the Muffins? And do we really have to have Ultravox's "Vienna" yet again?
But enjoy the gems on this collection - like Fiction Factory say, Feels Like Heaven. Why Isn't There A Sixth Star?Review date: 2008-04-18 Rating: 10 out of 10It's got 'Lawnchairs' by 'Our Daughter's Wedding' on it! What more reason do you want for buying it? a pale imitation of other compilations...Review date: 2008-04-14 Rating: 4 out of 10Bought this the other day - there are several other better-compiled eighties boxsets out there that have featured many of these less obvious 80's tracks previously, plus have included other, more interesting seminal 80s classics besides...However, it does take guts to put on lesser known tracks instead of the same old, same old as many comps tend to do...hopefully this will be a sign of things to come! Just as a postscript in response to other comments, the early 12"/80s volumes from a couple of years ago also contained many of these tracks (obviously with the 12" extended versions).Perfect!!Review date: 2008-04-13 Rating: 10 out of 10I don't think I've ever seen an 80s compilation where so much thought has gone into the track selection. This was obviously compiled by someone who was paying attention in the 80s, and is of equal value to those like me whose formative musical years were around that time, and newcomers to some of the wonderful music that decade has to offer.
The inclusion of a Soft Cell track other than "Tainted Love" is the first pointer that this is a quality product. It's a crying shame that so many people seem to think they were a one-hit wonder. But throughout this collection, even where well-known artists are included, it's not the obvious tracks we are given here. And the inclusion of near-forgotten acts like Propaganda, The Passions, Furniture and Mobiles is icing on the cake. The only thing that could have made this even better would have been the inclusion of a track by the best forgotten 80s gem of them all, New Musik.
So if you really want the kind of quality tunes that will lay to rest the myth that the 80s were "the decade that taste forgot", buy this. You won't regret it.
