DVD Description

The third installment in the widely beloved Spielberg/Lucas Indiana Jones saga begins with an introduction to a younger Indy (played by the late River Phoenix), who, through a fast-paced prologue, gives the audience insight into the roots of his taste for adventure, fear of snakes, and dogged determination to take historical artifacts out of the hands of bad guys and into the museums in which they belong. A grown-up Indy (Harrison Ford) reveals himself shortly afterward in a familiar classroom scene, teaching archeology to a disproportionate number of starry-eyed female college students in 1938. Once again, however, Dr. Jones is drawn away from his day job after an art collector (Julian Glover) approaches him with a proposition to find the much sought after Holy Grail. Circumstances reveal that there was another avid archeologist in search of the famed cup s family find themselves in a series of tough situations in locales ranging from Venice to the most treacherous spots in the Middle East. Complicating the situation further is the presence of Elsa (Alison Doody), a beautiful and intelligent woman with one fatal flaw: she's an undercover Nazi agent.

    Synopsis

Steven Spielberg's third action-packed entry in the Indiana Jones trilogy evokes the cliffhanger Saturday matinee serials of yesteryear. It's 1938 and Indy (Harrison Ford) receives word that his archaeologist dad, Professor Henry Jones (Sean Connery), has disappeared while on a quest for the Holy Grail. Indy embarks on a search for both his dad and the much-coveted artefact. THE LAST CRUSADE has a unique twist to the series' traditional opening-sequence cliffhanger. Actor River Phoenix plays an adolescent Indy who, while on a field trip with his Boy Scout troop, finds adventure on a circus train. Spielberg wanted to make the film about a father-and-son relationship, and Connery was his first choice to play Indy's dad. The selection was perfect, considering Spielberg and producer George Lucas first came up with the idea of the series as a rival to the James Bond movies in which Connery had starred. Before shooting THE LAST CRUSADE, Spielberg was planning on directing RAIN MAN with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise but gave up the project to fulfil his contractual obligation with Lucas to make a third Indiana Jones movie.

But the Dogs Name Was Indiana!
Review date: 2008-08-21 Rating: 10 out of 10

The Last Crusade recaptured the fun and excitement of the first Indiana Jones movie with a father son pair-up that is both genius and funny. James Bond and Indiana Jones together...now there's a dynamic duo! What is especially ironic is that Spielberg was inspired to have a cloak and dagger plot in the Indiana Jones series that was born from a love the James Bond films.

Harrison Ford brings Indiana Jones back to life with an amazing performance. But this time we get to see a bit of the little boy who is trying to impress his father. A couple of the most enjoyable parts of the movie are when Indiana does something that he is proud of and looks to his father for approval...only to gets a look of disdain!

Sean Connery has always been one of my favorite actors ever since the early days of Bond. A true mans man and a ladies man. He seems to be as comfortable in a suit as wresting in the mud. Connery gives a stunning performance in the Last Crusade as a driven man in search of the Holy Grail who deeply loves his son, but as with many fathers, is clumsy at expressing that love. One of the great lines of the movie came when Connery confronts his son about the origin of his adventurous name when he says in typical Connery fashion: "The dogs name was Indiana!"

There are many memorable scenes. We get to find out why Indy hates snakes. In the opening of the movie the young Indy (played by River Phoenix) falls into a circus train car full of snakes...and hates them ever after. Who can blame him! Another memorable scene is when Indiana comes face to face with Hitler (at a rally in Berlin) who signs the critical journal Indy is holding.

The plot is about a quest for the Holy Grail that has incalculable value and magical powers to bring long...long life. The plot twists and turns, frightens and delights as our heroes get closer to the final prize. In one of the final twists of the plot Indian must "Choose Wisely" to save his father's life and not losing his own!

Overall a great addition to the Indiana Jones collection!

Review date: 2008-05-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

In my opinion, probably the best indiana jones film ever made. With Sean Connery brought in as Indys dad adding genious comedy value!! 'It is you junior!' Excellent stunts time after time, with a motor bike, boat, aeroplane, car and tank chase! 'They were trying to kill us!!! The holy grail is the quest this time and as usual the whole of Germany is on their backs! when Indy rescues dad from a castle, they face the task of finding the cup of christ that can give unlimited life! Sola and Marcus are at hand till the finale who are great characters and friends of indys from the first film! Great story and action all the way through make Last Crusade a masterpeice!!!!

Harrison and co do it again!
Review date: 2008-05-20 Rating: 8 out of 10

The 3rd and last indy film to be made and those cheeky nazi's are at it again, with attaining the holy grail firmly on their agenda! Seemingly so preoccupied with seeking out sacred artifacts it's no wonder they lost the war. On hand to help Indy this time is his father played by sean connery and it has to be said he steals the show (won best actor osca 1989). As with the previous films the stunts are brilliant the set pieces are also very well thought out. Don't worry, for this special edition all the scenes involving short-round have been cut out.
Unlike the phantom menace, attack of the clones, revenge of the sith etc etc... beard guru george lucas has come up with a pretty good story that still holds up even after all these years. Luckilly spielberg made this film before he went mental.
