A LITTLE BROWNED-OFF
Review date: 2008-10-07 Rating: 4 out of 10

Having bought this CD (full-price, ouch!), I was rather disappointed.
Yes, I like Joe Brown's songs, but even though a few of the tracks had been re-recorded (and it said so on the cover), it sounded as though a couple of the "original" tracks were perhaps not the versions heard on those old 45s!

For those not used to the "proper" originals, this CD would seem a good buy on the face of it....but I felt a bit cheated!

So....I purchased the double CD "Piccadilly/Pye Anthology" at a cheaper price...that's more like it, much more satisfying!

Joe Brown is special. This cockney ragamuffin with a guitar has been around since Elvis ruled. He has seen the Beatles and Stones and everyone else come and go.
Its all here.Enery the 8th.Picture of you.Thats what love will do.All the old hits I grew up listening to plus his more recent work such as Malt and barley blues,See you in my dreams[which Joe sang at the george Harrison tribute show].
Joe has played with Eddie Cochran,Marty Wilde,Billy Fury. Its time to hear the mans own work on a very best album. This is it.

JOE BROWN IS BETTER THAN EVER a national treasure.

My wife and I saw Joe in concert late last year in Cheltenham. The guy gives you a wonderful night of music and humour,he has one cracking band. You leave having been well entertained.I see many current as well as long established artistes throughout most years and I would say Joe is one of the very best.If anyone should have a BritAward for services to British music Joe should be(maybe along with Marty Wilde) the ones to get it.Anyway to this set, simply wonderful stuff throughout.Apart from the first few tracks of classic recordings most of the material here is newly recorded with his touring band including his daughter Sam,who surely has one of the best voices around. With guests that include Dave Edmunds and Jools Holland, this is one album that delivers from track one to track twenty, yes it has twenty tracks, great value.Great songs from a whole range of styles from pop, rock, folk, country and even rockabilly.Buy with absolute confidence from one of the greatest artistes this country has even produced.Great also to see this album selling so well and getting so much positive exposure. Thanks Joe you still reign supreme, and boy if you play or plan to play guitar this album is a benchmark of tasty and melodic playing.

Joe Brown.....better with age
