Pleasantly surprising
Review date: 2010-08-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

I think everyone has a soft spot for budget horror films, but at the same time I don't think we expect much more from them than a bit of action, violence and fun. With Outpost, however, there is something rather original about it, and you quickly realise that this isn't quite like other mundane horror flicks.

A group of mercenaries are commissioned to accompany a scientist to an old Nazi bunker, which curiously has not been looted. It is soon realised that something is afoot when bodies are discovered inside, and even a 'survivor', who is apparently in a vegetative state. Fire-fights soon start taking place at the surface, between the mercenaries and an unknown foe, and strange things begin happening underground. Cutting the story short, basically what the bunker contains is Nazi super soldiers, who don't very much like visitors.

Fantastic action scenes throughout, and some damn scary moments when the lights go out and Nazi zombies start creeping around everywhere. Quality stuff; much recommended.

Horrible horror movie
Review date: 2010-08-20 Rating: 2 out of 10

Nice start, poor end. The sequel is an insult. Ray Stevenson's skills are very much wasted here.

entertaining fodder

This film is a good film, it isnt great or amazing or anything like that, its just good and it will pass away 90 mins.
The film deals with a bunch of skilled henchman helping a guy get to a bunker for some reason, we dont really find out why until deep in the film.
The bunker is an old nazi bunker and it is being guarded by the undead, zombies, if you please.
The film has a nice pace to it, slow yet brooding, fearful yet entertaining. Some of the acting isnt great and the budget is far from vast but thats ok i guess.
There are some inventive kills in it which i salute and whether or not you find the film predicatable is entirely your call.
This is a silly film in parts but it knows its role, worth a look for sure.

Could of been a great zombie movie!
Review date: 2010-06-09 Rating: 2 out of 10

This film is very slow and there is hardly any gory zombie attacks i think there is about 4 or 5 with little blood or gore !. Most of the film is spent waiting for the zombies to attack in which does not happen till the last 10 minutes of the movie again with little blood or gore. It is a very slow moving movie when i was sure that at any time the cast were going to start chatting about the weather!. Boring , Slow and hardly any blood or gore for a zombie movie.

Passable short story, not suited for a full length feature film:
Review date: 2010-05-24 Rating: 4 out of 10

This movie was a definite attempt to tap into Tales From The Crypt era spooky goings on, but felt it absolutely necessary to take the Zombie feature to the Nth degree - which actually does more harm than good.

As a short feature of 30 or 40 minutes, with the details condensed, you have a very strong premise and decent tension raising techniques. Stretched over 80 minutes this movie spends far too long trying to make you care about inconsequential characters with few redeeming characteristics.

Add to that its determination to mix genres in order to create an "original" Zombie origin story and you just end up with a movie that has to spend far too long with idiotic characters running around whilst the story contrives to not provide any explanation of itself in order to maintain mystery.

As a Zombie / Horror fan I did enjoy it, I have seen far worse, and could appreciate a lot of the effort put into the movie to try and tap into Alien / Romero / 28 Days and more recent movies that in turn are trying to tap into the culture revival of Zombie movies. Despite that I find it hard to recommend this as anything other than as a time passing experiment.

There are many better movies than this in the genre, look for them first.
