This series of Lewis is set five years after the death of Inspector Morse (to whom Lewis was, of course, the sidekick), and while the gap left behind by the late, great John Thaw is occasionally felt, this is still very much quality drama in its own right. Thus, this DVD set brings together all four feature-length episodes from the second series of Lewis, and finds the detective in his familiar Oxford stomping ground. Accompanied by Laurence Fox's DS Hathaway, a collection of well-written, compelling mysteries are waiting to be solved. The series' investigations cover the discovery of a body in a library through to the world of underground boxing and a rape case that brings out the worst in the Oxford establishment. And there aren't any weak links here: each episode is involving, intelligent and a gripping watch. Even at its worst, Lewis is very good television drama. What's more, Whately is terrific in the increasingly complex central role, and the scripts continue to allow him to flesh out the character. Lewis is, in many ways, a flawed man, and as he works his way through the layered and involving cases, this becomes ever-more obvious. And the programme is all the better for it. For in spite of some cynicism when it first announced that a standalone Lewis programme was being produced, there's ample here to silence the most sceptical of naysayers. After the successful first standalone outing for the character, Kevin Whately returns to the title role of Lewis again, for a second full season of investigations. And things seem, to the benefit of the viewer, just as dangerous as they always were.
Excellent detective series

The Morse hangover with Lewis, to my mind, has well and truly gone. Lewis' character has developed (and crucailly is still developing) thanks in large part to Kevin Whately but also due to the fact the series is extremely well written. The key was having a support character who could add something extra to off-set Lewis' more straight-up persona and Hathaway is both brilliantly acted and well played out.
There are only ocasional nods to Morse and these never feel strained, instead they tend to work as they would in real life: the odd rememberance and half-forgotten memory.
I was a huge fan of Morse and heartily recommend Lewis.

Hmm, I'm not convinced...

I must confess that I do enjoy these series as a legacy of Morse, but really it is a rather pale imitation. I'm not sure that Kevin Whately has enough presence as an actor to carry the whole and the character of Lewis himself doesn't have the intuition and insight of Morse, making his own sudden revelations to solve a case somewhat implausible. Hathaway was a fascinating chracter in the earlier series, the real keeper of the Morse flame, but seems to have evolved (or rather devolved) into merely a sounding board for Lewis. I'm sure I'll keep on watching though...

With this second series I feel Lewis has lost the "ooh, not as good as Morse" tag and come into it's own.
Series One, in my opinion, nodded a little too often in the direction of Morse's ghost who always seemed to be one step behind Robbie Lewis.
Series Two is superb. Lewis and Hathaway are now their own closely knit unit and some of the interplay between them was touching and amusing. It was also nice to find out about Hathaway's "priestly past".
There was Morse and now there's Lewis. Buy this, you won't be disappointed.

This set is well worth the price. Hours of entertainment.
Many reviewers compare Lewis with Morse, with varying conclusions, but the set should be viewed as a stand-alone series. The relationship between Lewis and Hathaway as they try to come to terms with opposites, is intriguing, the productions values are excellent, and Oxford, or at least that part of it we are allowed to see, is a stunning backdrop. There are things which stretch credibility: every female after Lewis, Hathaway being called gorgeous, not to mention everyone being able to drive cars around Oxford. But one can forgive the writers. The series is entertaining if you suspend belief for a while and this box set is excellent value for money.

I have always been a great fan of Morse, but Lewis has surpassed even that wonderful series , a must-see for all fans of detective mysteries.
Kevin Whately is fantastic as always ,but Laurence Fox made it for me. as the cool unflappable Hathaway, absolutely brilliant I hope that Lewis will continue to run as long as Morse did.
