Sex n drugs n guns: an average late night rental...
Review date: 2008-08-31 Rating: 6 out of 10

Watching 'Loaded' is a lot like being the only sober person at a stag night where everyone else is completely tanked up. They seem to be having a good time, but you don't...
In fact, most of the movie is an extended stag party, and the story revolves around a preppie young man who goes wildly off the rails after a weekend of sex n drugs. Next thing you know he's an accessory to murder, his family is ripped apart and his girlfriend's life is in danger. If it was 15 minutes shorter and given better direction, this could've been a 4-star film, in fact.

It's certainly not the worst movie I've sat through, and does have a couple of redeeming features -- Vinne Jones gets the best lines even if he is only on screen for less than five minutes. There's plenty of girlish eye-candy, a loud soundtrack, blazing guns, shouting, swearing and snorting, and there is even a solid plotline underpinning the action.
The trouble is that the audience doesn't understand the plot for most of the film, so we spent a lot of time puzzling over why the hero was being so dumb, and why the bad guy would even bother with half of what he was doing. If we'd been given a bit more of the back story then we could've enjoyed the development of the story -- as it was, the film seemed more like a series of disconnected and unlikely events.
Loaded is probably an ideal movie to watch at about 1am, after you've gotten back from the pub and eaten the kebabs. You can enjoy the partying and the punching and not worry too much about the logic. Probably not a movie to sit down and watch on Saturday afternoon when your parents have popped round for tea...

Not a feel good movie!
Review date: 2008-08-24 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is a dark tale of a reformed drug user who reacts to his controlled, sober life (as a law student) by being drawn into a world of violence and drug dealing that is way above what he can handle. His attraction to drugs is the catalyst for this involvement and leads him into gang violence and murder, which he cannot escape from. I won't spoil it by revealing the twist to the story.
As mentioned by the previous reviewer, Vinnie Jones makes just three appearances, but they are good ones! Not a bad film and definitely worth watching.

...surprisingly fun and action packed hokum...
Review date: 2008-08-18 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is one of those films that the phrase "straight to DVD" was invented for. I mean, when your headliner is the wee laddie out of Desperate Housewives who took his shirt off a lot, and Vinnie Jones still gets star billing, then hopes are not high for an evenings quality entertainment.

Well, I, and you, were wrong. Because this is a crash! bang! wallop! of a Friday night in DVD. Your basic plotline goes; Tristan Price (Metcalfe) has money, a bright future and a hot girlfriend. But the demons from his past make him a target for the nasty, boo hiss, villain of the piece Sebastian (played eye-poppingly well by Corey Large) a ruthless drug dealer who lures Tristan into his lurid world of cars, chicks and semi automatic weapons.

It all starts to go wrong when Tristan has a birthday night out on the town with his brother Hayden, which ends up in beer, lap dances and an uber hotty called April. Before you have time to blink Tristan is off into a crazy assed world of murder and mayhem, all with a cloud of uncertainty about it. The script is no great shakes, but director Alan Pao has an excellent eye for the MTV generation visual shots and knows how to crank up the action.

The mist of the whys and wherefores clear up near the end, and with a strong supporting cast of didn't you used to be in Heroes / Buck Rogers / Baywatch, this is a fine way to spend an evening at home. Even better, despite his billing, Vinnie Jones only shows up a couple of times, bunnet class, Sebastian's rival, Mr. Black.

There's not much in the way of extras, but I don't imagine there was much spare cash sloshing about, so it's the usual behind-the-scenes featurette, a brief gag reel, and some trailers.
