A Masterpiece. (And Stunning Ending!!)
Review date: 2008-10-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

Wow! If one word describes The Mist's ability to shock and scare the watcher then this is it. Contrary to some reviews I believe the script is very well thought out and interesting showing what happens when society breaks down and although the special effects start out a little bit on the cheap side they get better and better including a stunning sequence involving flying bugs. Unlike other horror movies it does sort of touch upon why it's happening and has an absolutely amazing ending that no-one would see coming. The americans didn't like the shock ending but is in complete contrast to other god awful endings. (No Country for old men and There will be Blood being prime examples!) This is a demonstration of how you end a film in style. It will leave you gobsmacked. This is not only the best horror movie of the year, it's the best of the current generation and possibly one of the best ever. Refreshing, original and supported by a truly remarkable cast including the brilliant Marcia Gay Harden, this holds it's own with Frank Darabont's other classics The Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile. Brilliant!

A monumental waste of a decent idea
Review date: 2008-09-21 Rating: 2 out of 10

This is the 1st time ive ever been compelled to write a review of something bad but people thinking about buying this dvd need to be warned!!! (where are all these good reviews coming from?)

Let me start off by saying it isnt ALL bad and the idea of a group of random people being stuck in a supermarket whilst beings, acidentally transported from another dimension by army experimentation try to kill them is full of promise and as Frank Darabont was directing my hopes were fairly high. But there are so many flaws in this movie i dont know where to begin!

The script is abysmal, WAY too many characters, bad editing, terrible acting apart from Jane, awful CGI especially on the tentacles which looked like something from the X files 15 years ago, plotholes everywhere, The neighbour thinks its a big joke? WHY? The pathetic attempts to cover the glass with a bit of tape? How do scores of people all become part of a cult in 24 hours and start murdering their fellow villagers? Why go to the pharmacy...oh yeah to hear the army guy and move the plot or lack of it along! And as for the ending, i have to say i love an unhappy ending and i think there are too few in hollywood but although this ending is extremely unhappy it is also mindblowingly ridiculous to believe that a man who spends the entire movie telling us how much he loves his son whould put a bullet in his head rather than leave the car and keep going??

For anyone like me who enjoyed Darabonts previous King adaptations dont look for anything of the same here. This is a woeful movie on so many counts and leaves you Hollow at the end apart from a feeling that you really wasted part of your life on this movie just as the movie wastes Darabonts talent at direction.

Avoid at all costs.

1 star for the scenes where the bugs attack, the massive monster & the eerie music near the end.

CONTRIVED

Having seen the gripping THE GREEN MILE I thought this might be something worth watching. Was I in for a surprise! As soon as the mist rolls in, the story--and in particular the characters' behavior--becomes contrived, an attempt to make this film scary, suspenseful, as well as moralistic. All in vain, unfortunately. The drama is so exaggerated it eventually becomes pathetic and ludicrous, with a lipsticked, cowardly soldier, a black who acts like a toddler refusing to believe, and some ALIEN/The Thing-stuff thrown in for good measure. And what's the moral of this story anyway? That man is supposed to put his faith in religious fanatics if he wants to save himself and his dear ones? Ah, come ON! A sign of the times, no doubt. I read King's novella back in the eighties and I liked it (as with much of his earlier fiction). If he (King) is happy about this screen adaptation, then he can no longer be serious about his work. I just keep wondering why they didn't make this into a comedy (an EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS sort of movie), then I might have enjoyed it. A better ending would have been the car with the five of them in it being crushed by a gigantic monster foot, accompanied by the sound of a deafening, apocalyptic fart.

Good but flawed

If you're looking for a good scary horror which isn't aimed entirely at the teenage shock market then I'd get this film. Having said that I do have a couple of small issues. The biggest issue being the ending, which I think was unnecessary and a bit gimmicky, yes it's shocking but it's not hard to shock. I had a feeling it was coming as well and thought oh don't do this. I wasn't looking for a happy ending just an ending which fitted the rest of the film.

Another point which really annoyed me was when the main character decides to leave his son and go off to the chemist! So after spending the first half of the movie telling people not to leave he's now prepared to leave his 8/9 year old son (yes you heard right - leave his son) to get medicine for someone who's burnt? Bit pathetic really as he had already spoken about leaving the supermarket for good with another small group of people. I was loving this film up until this point and I very nearly switched it off however in hindsight I realised they had to leave to supermarket to move the plot on. It was similar to the horror films of the 60s when a person would enter a dark house and not put the light on before walking around. It just didn't make sense. I think up until this point it had been a very believable movie, particularly for its subject matter, which is why it really annoyed me.

However ignoring the two gripes above it is still a really well acted and crafted movie. It's atmospheric and extremely creepy in parts. I particularly liked the relationship between the black and white main characters. A different ending and I'd give it 5 stars.
