He adopts this role as his new cover and sets about baking bread and cakes for the village. When sparks fly with the local vet Rhiannon (Kate Ashfield) he decides to start a new life as the village baker, but his past is about to catch up with him. Absolutely a surprise! We did not know what to expect at all and it was no dissapointment. It is really funny and surprising. You can almost see it happening for real. I won't tell you, just watch the film and be happy! You might end up "baking" afterwards.

Shakespeare's Cakes

This film is scripted and filmed with a huge sense of fun and gives Damian Lewis the opportunity to demonstrate his genius as a comic actor, on a smaller scale but not unlike his role in the NBC series Life. Kate Ashfield as the local vet is the perfect foil for him, a terrifically comic partnership with sharp dialogue. The sex scene between them where they end up on the floor, sexy and gorgeous, covered in eggs and jam, must be the funniest pair of naked bodies ever filmed. It's worth buying the DVD for that alone. All the other characters are just as brilliantly cast creating a series of comic gems, the locations are beautiful and though the plot requires a suspension of disbelief as it gets more and more fantastic, ending with two professional gunmen fighting each other with swords and sticks, a nod to Shakespeare whose bust is prominently displayed in the pub, the humour is quite subtle and the whole has great sincerity.
A real bonus on the DVD is the commentary between the brothers Damian and Gareth, so laid back and low key it is in itself a spoof on the self-promoting earnestness of most producers talking about their own work. And don't miss the explanation of how they filmed the exploding ram.

Madness, pure madness!

I only got this dvd to rent because i'm a big fan of damien lewis, but after a slow start, this film blossomed into an absoloute gem! Being welsh myself, i love the way we're portrayed in this film (as most valley people, excluding myself of course!). The funeral is a joy to watch as is the accompanying song! laugh out loud stuff most of the time! if you like twin town you love this film!

The Baker is brilliant

I had the privledge of seeing "The Baker" on dvd recently and I have to say it's one of the funniest films I've seen in recent years. It's an off-beat comedy rather than a broad one filled with unique, oddball characters and silly situations. Damian Lewis shines as Milo, the jaded hitman who wants to get out of the business, but the rest of the cast is stellar, including "New Amsterdam"'s Nicolaj Coster-Waldau as a rival hitman and Michael Gambon as Milo's boss. There's a lovely romance between Milo and the town's veterinarian which culminates in one of the funniest/sexiest love scenes on film. Highly recommended.

Painfull dross

I dont often write reviews but feel i must warn anyone from making the same mistake i did, this is quite frankly the most unfunny so called commedy i have ever seen.Michael Gambon must have been off his head on acid(or got payed a fortune)to have had anything to do with this utter disaster of a film, its about as funny as the blitz, the other two reviews must be by the director because believe me this will be one of worst films you will ever see.
