It had promise...

I'm a massive fan of Gorman and everything he has done, and although I'd happily watch this again and again, it isn't as good as it could have been.
This film could have easily been 3 hours, gone more in depth and shown what real America is about.
I find that, without spoiling it too much, after his female partner has back problems and needs to be replaced, this rest of the film is very rushed.
Like all his Books that he has done a Show about, the book goes into much more detail and you can get alot more out of this "story" than by just watching it.
The DVD has no extras, which is a little annoying, when you consider the possibilities of what could be added. Not even a commentary.
If you havn't seen it, it's worth a watch. If you saw it on TV and are hoping for something new, don't bother.
If you have read the book and fancy seeing it in video form, you'll find yourself thinking "well, why didn't he put that bit in"

Unchained, unfulfilledReview date: 2008-06-07 Rating: 4 out of 10I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed the entire tale.
I then watched the DVD hoping to relive the tale in full.
I didn't.
Huge great swathes of the book that make the story the entertaining story that it is are glossed over in thirty second snippets, or just plain ignored.
The book merits a six part series to cover the story, after all a trip from one side of a vast country to the other is tough to cover in ninety minutes.
In short, read the bookGood film, dissapointing DVDReview date: 2008-05-01 Rating: 6 out of 10I really enjoyed this film when i watched it on more 4 and hoped that the DVD would hold extras, especially considering it was filmed in late 2006 and released 2008 with a good years worth of editing i guess i was expecting more than just the film.
despite this though i am glad i bought it, and very glad i bought the book as well as the DVD.A genuine American road-trip, brilliant!Review date: 2008-04-18 Rating: 10 out of 10I loved this documentary when it was on TV so was really chuffed when I saw it was going to be released on DVD. Enjoyed it even more on second viewing and have lent it to a couple of friends who have raved about it too.
Yes it's different to Are you Dave Gorman and Googlewhack Adventure but it has an important point to make. After all it's a documentary, not a comedy, and in order to keep it authentic he hadn't researched his route or had a massive entourage like other travellers (take note McGregor and Boorman), so what you see is what you get - the real account of a road trip.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to see the other side to the corporate America we're all so familiar with or has an interest in supporting independent businesses. There's some wonderful stories and captivating scenery. Well done Dave on a genuine film, beautifully shot.very enjoyableReview date: 2008-04-10 Rating: 10 out of 10this was a wonderfully entertaining look at a rarely seen side of American life, funny and poignant.
i can't wait for the acompanying book.
