'Old fashioned' documentary. Easy to watch and great value
Review date: 2007-12-19 Rating: 8 out of 10

This is the kind of TV you can safely and enjoyably watch with your grandma, or grandkids. This collection offers three full series which makes it great value; if you bought them separately then you'd pay about sixty quid, so in this format they are half price.

Alan Titchmarsh (whose gardening career started at Kew) narrates a charming series of half hour programmes which are almost defiantly olde Englishe in their style. Each series follows a different set of people at Kew Gardens, and gives an overview of their specialities and how they husband the plants, grounds, trees and special events which are a part of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The photography is occasionally spectacular, and each episode is both educational and colourful. Even the incidental music is well chosen.

The series isn't wildly challenging or controversial, nor is it packed with tips for hands-on gardening. It's not that sort of show. Instead we see behind the scenes at the 300 acre site, and begin to understand what goes in to keeping the Kew collection in good health. With many plant species under threat in their natural environments, the series also shows the efforts Kew are making to conserve different plants, and how their field research is vital in this field.
Overall, there's plenty of entertaining viewing here. Ideal gift for your mum...
