Amazon.co.uk Review
Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Tarantino's Death Proof is the mellower of the two, relatively speaking; it's wordier (as to be expected) and rife with pulp/comic book posturing and eminently quotable dialogue. It also features a terrific lead performance by Kurt Russell as a homicidal stunt man whose weapon of choice is a souped-up car. Tarantino's affection for his own dialogue slows down the action at times, but he does provide showy roles for a host of likable actresses, including Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, and newcomer Zoe Bell, who was Uma Thurman's stunt double in Kill Bill. Detractors may decry the rampant violence and latch onto a sexist undertone in Tarantino's feature, but for those viewers who grew up watching these types of films in either theaters or on VHS, such elements will be probably be more of a virtue than a detrimental factor. --Paul Gaita

Synopsis
Master director Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION) indulges his inner fanboy by paying homage to his favourite B-movies in DEATH PROOF. Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) stalks beautiful women with his deadly vintage car, but when he picks a trio of tough girls (Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, and Zoe Bell), he learns they aren’t such easy prey. As with any Tarantino film, there are plenty of nods to pop culture. Most of the scenes are deliberately short on plot development, the dialogue comes thick and fast throughout, and the film stock is often cleverly manipulated to perfectly replicate the B-movie aesthetic. DEATH PROOF was originally released as part of the GRINDHOUSE double feature with Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR.
VERY LITTLE POINT

As someone who has enjoyed all Tarantino's previous work, and 'gets it' this was just so disappointing.
I was suspicious that after lots of pre publicity things had gone quiet, and even worse it was suddenly available rather cheaply.
After the two segments, bad guy kills girls, followed by (other) girls get bad guy, both fairly dire, I was waiting for the third and final segment that would suprise and entertain me. Then, 'The End' came up, would there be a twist?
No, that really was the end. Oh dear!

Far from flawless, but good overallReview date: 2008-08-22 Rating: 8 out of 10*CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS*
"Death Proof" is a fascinating mix of the terrible and the brilliant. Not much cop as a slasher flick, but as its own thing it was good overall. Most of the endless dialogue was boring, while over times I lost track of time and didn't mind the talking. Terrible sudden ending though - the film is missing an important scene when the girls return the beat up car to its owner, and we get his reaction.
"Planet Terror" (5 stars) is a brilliant zombie movie; one part serious, two parts spoof. It's stupid in all the right ways. I was put off by the silly machine gun leg poster. Turns out she only gets the leg enhancement in the last ten minutes, and by that point it feels right at home with all the other action. A masterpiece of its genre. I loved it. Much better than the similarly jokey "Evil Dead II" in my opinion.
Both are worth seeing. I think they made a mistake with the original "Grindhouse" film order. Following the visceral, kinetic eye-candy of "Planet Terror" with the plodding, talk-heavy "Death Proof" makes no sense. BADReview date: 2008-07-23 Rating: 2 out of 10Absolutle terrible...half the cinema left before the end as it was so boring, and to be honest I really wish I had followed them. I would have given it 2 stars until the end...THE most ridiculous ending of all time, took it down to 1 star.
Do yourself a favour and avoid this Quentin Tarantino at his adrenaline pumping BEST!!!Review date: 2008-07-22 Rating: 10 out of 10yes Kill Bill,Pulp Fiction and the(getting better with age)Jackie Brown are classics but Death Proof is almost a total reversal on the modern plotlines for modern horror thrillers.
it not only payes homage to exploitation flicks it becomes one.
shamefully GRINDHOUSE was taken apart and split into two films(this and Planet Terror)but it is a very good thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.
evidently from the one/two star reviews fans were assuming this would be an astounding Tarantino flick...it is but its no way near Pulp Fiction,it is almost the complete reversal which is what i love about it.
Tarantino has taken the regular over used plot strings and tied it all up and inside out to make one of the greatest nostalgia thrillers of recent years.
it is very atmospheric and the fact that villain Stuntman Mike was portrayed by Kurt Russel makes the film the underrated gem that it is today...he is fantastic and one of the most psychotic characters i have ever seen in film history.
the cast are fabulous and its very rare to have Tarantino told almost entirely by a Female perspective, and its a very original method to use too...but remember its no chick flick as blood splatters on the screen and legs are amputated and explosions are consistently making appearences.
this isnt an ordinary thriller...oh no...its a down to earth high force back to basics trip through the old school cinema of the 60/70s and due to its realism it is a treat to watch and makes it a very effective film that is almost certainly a modern day classic that demands multiple viewings.
buy this along with Planet Terror to recreate the GRINDHOUSE experience.I WANT MY MONEY BACK!Review date: 2008-07-17 Rating: 2 out of 10This is the most BORING and disappointing film I even seen in quite a while. In fact Death Proof redefines the word BORING. There is no real story here, just a plot and it is BORING and BAD.
