not a bad comedian but over-rated.

despite his being regarded as something of a legend in film comedy, i personally can not see what all the fuss is about with W.C Fields. he seems quite talented enough so perhaps i've missed the point of his humour. the dialogue written for him is rather lost on me.
after watching three films from this collection with "the bank dick" being the most agreeable, i find it rather a challenge to engage myself in viewing a W.C Fields film. watching "it's a gift," seemed to stifle me as the film didn't give fields much room to show what he was capable of. the film was too stodgy and slow-moving. the man himself seemed rather contrived and too predictable in his attempts at slapstick.
i admit that his display of juggling in the one film(i forget which one) was and is a remarkable feat and obvious to me that fields took the time to practice that particular skill.
i might view one or two more of his films but i am not really convinced that my money was well spent. i think W.C Fields is better suited to short films as i found him much more effective.

One of my favourite comedy actors of all time.Great box set with some classic films and some good ones.Only 1 dissapointed me where you dont see the star until the end.Also 2 advertised by Amazon are not there but you still get 16 movies on 10 dvds.
Original comedy and great collectors item.

Two Titles Unfortunately Missing

Amazon.co.uk's description of this item includes MRS. WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH and ALICE IN WONDERLAND as part of this outstanding box set. Alas, neither are present -- and all of the discs here are double features except for two, which would have accomodated the MIA titles handsomely. This is just to warn those prospective buyers who might have sprung for this set to obtain one or the other. That problem aside, the set is beautifully designed and the films themselves look and sound splendid. A wonderful opportunity to discover or rediscover one of the movies' greatest funny men.

This is the perfect Fields set. All great prints of all the great films by the great one! I bought a copy on Jan 9th and when I tried to order another box today, Jan 20th, apparently Amazon.UK is no longer stocking them. There were only a couple of copies from folks that don't ship to the states. I managed to find one at a much higher price elsewhere. No "out of stock/ on order notice appeared. It will be a sad day if, in fact, this collection is locked away in favor of the smaller Universal sets that are more expensive and incomplete! Grab one asap or possibly forever hold your peace!

IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, GET A COPY OF THIS SET. I HAVE WAITED 20 YEARS FOR SUCH A FANTASTIC COLLECTION BY THE FUNNIEST MAN EVER TO SET FOOT IN FRONT OF A CAMERA. IF YOU LIKE LAUREL AND HARDY YOU WILL LOVE THIS.

WC FIELDS WAS THE FIRST AND BEST ALTERNATIVE COMEDIAN, BEFORE ALTERNATIVE COMEDY HAD EVEN BEEN INVENTED.
