Outrageous
Review date: 2008-11-29 Rating: 8 out of 10
As soon as this 1980 movie began i got the impression that the director Peter Hyams (Capricorn 1; Busting), walked into the studio just after R.Scott finished shooting Alien and said "Let me use your settings."
Outland is a well made movie features great music and fine acting and most importantly a great story. I suspect Hyams transferred the 1952 classic High Noon (f.Zinneman) to outer space. This really is the same story.
Some of the special effects are weak (the spacecraft and explosions. There is little in the way of character development, the film has a fairly slow pace, and the story itself is predictable; you can usually guess who is going to die next.
In a nutshell this is 90 minutes of High Noon in the Alien space ship.
