I'm not really sure why I bought this but I'm glad I did
Review date: 2008-10-09 Rating: 8 out of 10
I mean, I saw the first couple of episodes on cable and thought it was okay, just, but never got around to watching any more. Basically I bought this on a whim because, for a 22 episode tv series, it was pretty cheap. Let's face it, you do this sort of thing from time to time.
So I started watching it and, as I remembered, the first couple of episodes were just okay but I persevered and I then I got it. The actors are perfectly cast. Christina Cox as Vicki Nelson is an appealing mature heroine, intelligent, dedicated, not conventionally pretty, with a strong character. Kyle Schmid is brilliant as the sometimes wittily camp vampire Henry Fitzroy, pretty, surprisingly effeminate albeit macho when he needs to be. Dylan Neal completes the triumvirate as the macho cop and Vicki's ex-lover. The sexual tension and wry dialogue between the three of them is just great.
There's also a good backup cast of characters: Vicki's pretty goth assistant, the pathologist who knows more of the dark side than expected, the female detective with a barely suppressed crush on Dylan Neal's detective, and so on.
As long as the stories keep moving (which they mostly do) who needs anything else?
This is solid entertainment which should have had a second season.

Utter rubbishReview date: 2008-10-09 Rating: 2 out of 10I really wanted to like this series but I gave up half way through. I couldn't like Vicki Nelson and Henry just irritated me.The subject matter was the usual Supernatural Demon/nutty Vampire/Voodoo curse formulaic tripe but done with no passion, no verve and no believability.
How anyone could like this over "Moonlight" is beyond me, that series really explored the darker side of Human Nature and other far meatier issues yet the plug was pulled.
Here's hoping that DVD sales mean that Moonlight gets picked up again whilst Blood Ties gets consigned to the bin of the truly awful book adaptations along with the Dresden Files.Subtitles Please...Review date: 2008-09-01 Rating: 2 out of 10There are absolutely ZERO subtitles in this box set. Be them english or otherwise. I found the series to be average and the acting really poor. But if you've nothing to do at least it's worth the £9,98 I payed for it but no more!!! Well worth the watch Review date: 2008-08-20 Rating: 10 out of 10Watched this on Living and couldn't wait for the DVD! The fact that this is a show geared for adults is also a good aspect for me as kiddiness can sometimes be offputting. The show also prompted me to read the books and I believe that Tony would have been a benefit as would the romance writing as an occupation for Henry. But overall, if you're a fan of this genre - put this on your list.No clever quips, not entertaining & v.poor quality!Review date: 2008-08-17 Rating: 4 out of 10I am astonished by how many people have given this series a 5 star rating! I purchased the boxset based on the outstanding reviews here on Amazon and the idea of another potentially great vampire show... unfortunately this really doesn't deliver.
More hard-nosed than BUFFY and perhaps darker than SUPERNATURAL but not as high quality as either. I found myself waiting for sharp witty humour than never came: no satisfying twists or even a few fun fight-scenes I could relish. Quality-wise, if it wasn't for the 15 certification and the dark subject matter, I would say this would slot in quite nicely amongst the lower-budget daytime TV shows we are so accustomed to.
I managed to get this boxset for £9 and since then, the price has gone down even further. I suppose if you can make it past the pilot, there's a few OK episodes in there to look forward to. I agree with the couple of reviewers who point out that this show just recycles ideas from other (much better) TV shows; it doesn't put a new spin on things and any 'action' sequences presented are really low budget. If you're looking for something that deals with supernatural/occult and you've been a fan of things like BUFFY, ANGEL, SUPERNATURAL etc, I recommend buying THE DRESDEN FILES instead - it's the next logical step I guess and a lot smarter, funnier and miles more entertaining than Blood Ties!
