Amazon.co.uk Review

The second DVD release from the archives of Grange Hill, this DVD set brings together series three and four of the show, originally broadcast back in the early 1980s.

34 episodes are included in all, spread across the six discs in the set, and there’s a register of characters to get Grange Hill nostalgics happily reminiscing. On top of Tucker Jenkins and Benny Green, there’s the introduction of Pogo Patterson and Duane Orpington, while by the fourth series, Mrs McCluskey had moved into the headteacher’s office, where she’d stay for many years to come.

Joining Mrs McCluskey on the staff side were Grange Hill legends such as Mr Baxter, ‘Hoppy’ Hopwood and Mr Sutcliffe, and between them they had plenty on their hands. From bike thieves to the tuck shop through to romance in the staff room and a member of the school council taking bribes, it was very much business as usual at Britain’s most infamous comprehensive school.

Series three and four really sees Grange Hill in confident form, consistently delivering interesting and progressive storylines for its cast of characters, that stand up well today. What’s remarkable is that far from enjoying this boxset as a simple look back to a golden part of childrens’ programming, you’re likely to find yourself getting engrossed all over again. A smashing collection, that offers great value for money. Let’s hope it doesn’t take so long to release further series of the show. --Simon Brew

The 80s Begin...
Review date: 2007-11-29 Rating: 10 out of 10

Grange Hill really got into its stride here. The series was definitely going to be a runner, with the arrival of a new first year, including a young Susan Tully (later Michelle Fowler in EastEnders) as unhappy pupil Suzanne Ross. The show was looking ahead - there would be life in the classrooms of Grange Hill when Trisha, Tucker and co left.

This was simply terrific Grange Hill. We contemporaries of Tucker and Trisha out in the real world were absolutely hooked on the dramas of day-to-day life at this fictional comprehensive. Schools across the land were actually full of real Tucker and Trisha type characters, and all-too-knowing teachers like Mr Baxter. We could identify with the action on screen.

Whilst girls at my own real-life school wondered if Mr Sutcliffe and Miss Mooney would get together romantically, we boys were cheering on Tucker and his mates in all their daft activities - until the tragic death of a Grange Hill pupil in a strong plotline about "dares" gave us food for thought.

Thought provoking, funny, up-front and gritty, the third and fourth series of Grange Hill saw the show continue to create the template begun in series one and two, which would see the series return to our screens again and again.

Simply excellent.

Great stuff
Review date: 2007-11-18 Rating: 8 out of 10

I may be suffering from a case of galloping nostalgia, but I thought that this DVD was top stuff.

Great to see once again the esacapades of much loved characters from decades ago - and to now appreciate the authenticity of the depiction of school life at that time. Also interesting to see how the fractured society and financial problems of early 80s Britain colour the drama.

One star knocked off because the Pogo and Dwayne first years are an irritating and uninteresting bunch when compared with the Tucker and Trisha originals
