Johnny S is so wrong.
Review date: 2008-11-08 Rating: 10 out of 10
In response to Johnny S's comment about this series I would just like to say that I don't believe it is in the same league as Curb Your Enthusiasm. In fact I believe it to be far better than the American programme, this is probably one of the best comedies to come out of Britain in years. Jack Dee is in my opinion the best stand up comedian out there and this series has shown what a genius he is.

Stuck in bed with flu...only this to watch....the guy is a genius.
Charlie Chaplin, Steptoe, Alf Garnett, Jack Dee.....absolutely brilliant pathos.
It actually is sad to watch such well observed characters.
Not a duff one in the series.
More please. Not Always Funny, But Very CleverReview date: 2008-01-24 Rating: 8 out of 10** You might want to avoid reading this if you don't want to know too much about the characters **
Jack Dee is Rick Spleen, a comedian trying to get by in life. He's very funny in many ways, his dark sarcastic wit often lands him in trouble. Beneath all that, Jack's pretty much a guy who wishes the world was more the way he sees it. He always seems to land himself in trouble though, to amusing consequences.
Marty is his pal, (Sean Power) and he's very funny, naturally funny - which a lot of people cannot pull off. I get the feeling Rick's a bit jealous of it, though he tries his hardest not to show that. Though you sometimes get the feeling Marty's hiding things: under that happy guy there's still issues from when he did drugs and his friends in the US.
Rick is dating Mel (Raquel Cassidy) who's some sort of television exec. She's quite easy going, but can be rather gullible, especially when Rick lies. Sometimes you get the feeling Rick mocks her work though, and he wishes he had his TV show again.
Mel had a child, Sam (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) a rather passive person who doesn't seem to be with the rest of us at the best of times. She's hanging around with Ben who's also rather dull, and she usually tricks and cons money from Rick, usually on a daily basis. Not sure why Rick keeps up the pretense, probably for a quiet life.
Magda (Anna Crilly) does the cleaning around the house, and is from one of the ex-Russian satellites. She's very miserable, and seems not to be enjoying life at all. Rick isn't that great with her either and often dotes on her. Then again, he could argue that's what she's being paid to do. She's got some great lines in this series and Magda's always giving us a laugh.
This is a great comedy, Jack's really got the essence of a modern day family, with a miserable head leading them all. Rick, at the end of the day is quite happy and I think he values his friendship with Marty, and they really can't live without each other. I like the dark comedy in this, the way jokes backfire on the pair and the hilarious consequences. Jack Dee is very good in this, and his support is great, the characters are well built and they're quite likable and make you come back for more.
Definitely worth getting on DVD.
