Amazon.co.uk Review

The inevitable sequel to one of the decade’s most intriguing and well-made horror films, Hostel Part II, as the title implies, picks up pretty much where the last film left off. And it doesn’t take too long for the sequel to find the same groove that earned its predecessor so much attention.

The setting is once again an underground club, where people bid for the right to torture residents at the hostel of the title. Hostel Part II, however, lets us see events from the other perspective too, as we meet the wealthy businessmen who are availing themselves of the club’s services. It’s a logical dynamic for the movie, and it does bring a fresh perspective to a film that does eventually settle down to a cavalcade of gore and shock.

As a director, Eli Roth has clearly improved since last time around, even if this time he too often succumbs to the temptation to show rather than imply, and Hostel Part II as a result feels a little less fresh and more uncomfortable than its predecessor. Yet it’s most certainly an unsettling piece of cinema, and one likely to find favour with Roth’s increasing fanbase.

A word of warning, though. Hostel Part II isn’t shy about pulling its punches, and it very much justifies its 18 certificate. It’s also a cut above many of its modern day contemporaries in the genre, even though it fails to measure up to part one. --Jon Foster

Gives Us A Frightening View Of The Modern Psychi
Review date: 2008-04-05 Rating: 10 out of 10

Now going into this film I expected to be grossed out and to simply be enraptured by how far Eli Roth could take the gore in this movie to try and surpass the previous installment. Aside from the "Gorno" aspect of this movie, this has a very frightening message to it. This shows how a persons mental psychi is different from how they may express it towards others. I wont say much more as it will give away the whole premise of the movie and that's something I don't want to do as this has a bit more of a story to it compared to the previous film.

The movie starts out with Paxton (Jay Hernandez) who was the only survivor of the torture of the last film. It shows how he is coping with the trauma of watching his friends be tortured and killed and then himself experiencing such torment. The bosses of the Hostel catch up to Paxton and finally take him out to cancel the risk that he may reveal the sickening secret of the wealthy underworld.

This film does have more of a structure to it when compared to the first one. Three girls are backpacking across Europe and they become friends with Axelle (Vera Jordanova) who we learn is affiliated with the boss of the Hostel. Axelle is simply leading these girls into a trap which would eventually end their lives. On another side of the movie we are introduced to two business men who bid on being the men who killed these women. One of them wants to do the killing to fullfill what he feels as a darkness inside him that will make him feared by his peers. The other is a man who is pushed into the act for the same reason to instill a sub-conscious fear within his fellow colleagues.

If you're not familiar with the Hostel movies and are curious about them, then be warned. This film is extremely graphic with its no holds barred approach to blood and guts. It is a very entertaining film however and something that really makes you think and in a sense wonder if there are actually places like this in the world.

A good film that I would really only recommend to those who are familiar with this genre of movie.

I am never going to Slovakia.
Review date: 2008-03-03 Rating: 8 out of 10

This film scares me not because of the really gruesome scenes but because of the concept of muder for profit buisness that is at the heart of the story line. The thought that you could go on holiday to have literally something from a film happen to you is a really crazy.

This film is really good with loads of action and gore.

As illogical as it is I have decided never to go to Slovakia after watching this film.

Better than the First, THE BEST HORROR IN 5 YEARS
Review date: 2007-11-01 Rating: 10 out of 10

Firstly I would like to comment on the quality of the Blu ray disc which it is played through. The transfer is truly phenomenal from the new technology as I would expect when spending £700 on a player.

The film is definitely a carry on/rehash of the original, the plotline is very similiar the main difference with this film is the truly horrific violence/torture, It truly deserves the title which it has been given by the critics "THE TORTURE PORN MOVIE". Simply it is a mainstream attempt at a snuff movie. There is a truly cringing moment for all us men with a grotesque castration scene, not missing anything out. It is reminiscent of any 70's cannibal movies, e.g Cannibal Ferox. There are many more violent torture scenes including the bathing is a virgins blood, decapitations, scalpings and much much more. I was pleasently surprised to find the gore scenes as you may of found them in the 80's some looked quite low budget which I like but I know will notbe to everyone's taste. The acting is very good for this type of film, as with many teen movies the acting is generally poor. Eli Roth ( director ) also has the ability to make his movies suspense filled with black humour too. There is 1 twist which I will not reveal but is a welcome surprise in a normally bland teen genre. Tarantino also put his name to the film which I do not endorse in any way as in a way it can deceive the audience to believe it was one of his movies and true credit should be given to the genius that is Eli Roth who is single handedly keeping modern horror alive. I have been a gorehound/horror movie watcher for over 10 years and have seen all that horror has to offer so far and this is an immense film. It will never be genre busting but it will become a depraved cult classic and should surely be the movie that puts Eli on the map.
I reccomend this movie to anyone who is not easily offended as it is depraved in parts. OR To anyone who can go into a modern horror with an open mind. Definitely no under 18's.
I GIVE THIS 5 OUT OF 5
