things of quality have no fear of time

I'd never seen this series before but had always been curious about it from what I'd read - and who can resist Henry Mancini's brilliantly seductive jazzy theme tune? Having just watched season 2 I have to say, I'm very impressed. These shows really stand up to the test of time.
So often with shows of this vintage, it's a case of "admiring" the work rather than really enjoying it. Many shows are innovative and pioneering for their time, but suffer in comparison to what has come since. But Peter Gunn holds it own by any standards. Very few episodes feel dated, the majority are terrific, and several are just extraordinary.
Scripts full of wit, superb character performances, high production values, stylish film-noir set-ups - and of course Mancini's moody big band score - all combine to make a thoroughly superior series.
More than anything it reminds me of the first series of Danger Man with its pacing and intriguing 25 minute plots. Proof that things of quality need have no fear of time.
