A giggle, but not hugely impressive...kids loved it

This is a laugh, it plays the well-known X Factor music in the background and between levels, and it features our four favourite "Love to hate" judges, Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh. It has the true X Factor appeal, even if you don't have to get up and sing. A blessing in disguise for some of us oldies. I was a little put off at first when I thought this was only for fans who have seen X Factor and thus would have an advantage by remembering some of the answers, but this turned out not to be the case. Some questions are based on the real X Factor contestants ability to sing, and some are random music questions. Something for everyone.

As in the real X factor, it is hosted by Fearne Cotton and there are the judges to get past during the first auditions. If you pass by guessing the answer correctly they will then decide if you are ready to go to boot camp. The correct answer depends on whether you agree with the judge you have chosen to be. If the singer wasn't good enough to go through, and as a judge you think they are, you are out! The next level is out of your reach, and you must leave. If you win, there are points, and pats on the back from family members. Not terribly exciting at this stage, but it improved as the game progressed.

During the next round the X Factor hopefuls are divided into categories and sent off to boot camp. Here after answering three questions you have the chance to gain more points, and even bonus questions. Pass this, and you are through to the Judges Homes level. Yes the end, is within reach, if only you can get past those evil judges, and this time you are on their turf and they make no allowances for mistakes.

The beat the clock round is the Judges Homes level. It's fast, furious and nerve-wracking, but not the same as standing up and singing your heart out in front of an encouraging audience. Get through this stage, however, and you are in The Finals.

In The Finals five questions must be answered if you are to stay in until the very end week. By choosing harder questions and getting them right, you can speed along towards the finishing line since easy, medium and hard are worth one, two and three weeks respectively. Get through this, and you have reached the end of the X factor as the Grand Finalist. The ultimate win for those who care, and believe me, after getting that far, you will!

It's a fun, entertaining and cleverly thought out music trivia quiz, which the whole family enjoyed playing. Fearne Cotton, also supplies a good 'rules of the game' area, for anyone who might not understand how to play. As an adult, I could imagine it to get a bit repetitive after a while, but as this is suitable for all ages, and basically aimed at kids who watch the programme without fail and are avid fans, as my bunch are. To that end, really, it gets the thumbs up from me as it is simple, keeps them entertained, smiling and out of trouble. Plus don't ever doubt their competitive streak will help to keep them amused. If you have an in-car DVD player this would come in handy for the kids, and get you out of joining in yourself. I'm not hugely impressed, but it wasn't a complete flop for the family, hence the three stars.

For the fans only?

I am not a huge fan of X Factor though I have watched at least most of one whole series so I know how it works. I think that this game would be most fun when played with more people and more drinks. It was reasonably well paced for a DVD game (I find that some seem to move along at a pace so slow you lose all momentum and get bored). I think it would have been more fun had I been an X Factor fan, as my mum and sister seemed to be enjoying it more and they do like the program!

I love Simon Cowell but........

Hmm, not sure about this one. Yes, it was abit of fun over the festive period and gave us a few laughs and killed abit of time on Boxing Day but other than that I'm not sure it's one to play over and over.

The rules are quite simple: You guess if an auditionee got through the first round and then you go on to Boot Camp and then the live show and then the Finals. Some of it was quite repetitive though and I must admit that although I have watched all the shows I couldn't answer some of the questions.

All in all, not bad, fairly entertaining for a while but probably won't be played again.

Simply awful

If you are looking for a bit of fun over the festive season then please pass this by and look elsewhere.

Its simply awful. Its slow to work, and leaves you waiting for ages between questions and rounds. It also doesnt respond very quickly to the dvd remore, which is a big prblem on the timed round of questions.

The questions are obviously all about the x factor, so they can be somewhat repetitive.

However the worst part of the experience was when we were playing and one team was in front in the last round, when the game suddenly finished without warning, ending or saying who the winner was !

Just awful

Good fun for the family

Just like the show, this DVD has superb graphics, launching into the game with a cosmic zoom from out of space. Fern Cotton guides us through the game, as she does the live show, with great verve and energy.

The game is very easy to get into: the rules are simple, the context familiar and the questions are straightforward. The quality of the production is evident throughout with clear video and audio. Fern's dialogue works well with the game play and doesn't seem overly stereotyped, although there is obviously some repetition.

The show features questions about the previous 2 series but does not have any questions about the latest series which was in production at the time the DVD was made. Hopefully later versions of this game will be updated to include clips of Rhyddian, Leon and the others.

We enjoyed playing this game for an hour: it made a very pleasant alternative to watching television. I think we will enjoy playing it again a few more times as a family in the coming months.

This game lacks any addictive need to repetitively play the game and reach higher level, which is a major plus point.

All in all, a good gift for the X factor afficionado which will give a few hours of fun at a reasonable price.
