Two of TV`s funniest and most popular comic actors, Zach Braff (Scrubs) and Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) take no prisoners as they fight it out for the love of Sofia (Amanda Peet). Tom Reilly (Braff) and his wife Sofia (Peet) have just had a baby and when Sofia, the breadwinner, decides to be a stay-at-home mum, it's all change. They move out of the city, back to Sofia's hometown where Tom is offered a job at the firm run by his father-in-law (The legendary Charles Grodin). Everything seems to be fitting nicely into place until Chip (Bateman), Sofia's ex-boyfriend, local hero and all-round wonder-boy is appointed as Tom's manager. Chip's flame for Sofia still burns brightly and he will stop at nothing to see Tom undermined, humiliated and made a fool of in order to win back his ex...

Synopsis

This rollicking and slightly absurd comedy from director Jesse Peretz (FIRST LOVE, LAST RITES) begins when Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) loses his promising chef job at a swanky New York restaurant. He is compelled to move to small-town Ohio to take a job with his father-in-law (Charles Grodin) at an advertising agency to support his wife, Sofia (Amanda Peet), and newborn son. Tom's adjustment to the rhythms and rituals of the office world is awkward at best, and complicated by the presence of an old high-school flame of Sofia's (Jason Bateman), a passive-aggressive paraplegic who schemes to get Sofia back. Meanwhile, Sofia must cope with the shock of switching roles from powerful big-city lawyer to stay-at-home suburban mother. Young working parents will identify with the familiar conflicts presented here as the embattled Tom and frustrated Sofia struggle to make sense of their new responsibilities. Braff purveys his patented nerdy charm as a nice guy whose behaviour becomes more and more manic as the rug gets continually pulled out from under him, and Peet is a lovely screen presence even as her character's patience and enthusiasm fade in less than attractive ways. Their performances blend wry intelligence with out-and-out slapstick, and they are supported by a superb ensemble cast including Amy Poehler, Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, Donal Logue, and Mia Farrow. While some of the situations and jokes border on tasteless, it's the smart kind of gross-out humor of a Farrelly Brothers or Jay Roach film, and the film never never loses its heart, as embodied by Braff and Peet.

Mediocre

Not a bad comedy, but perhaps not the right type for a film. Felt it was quite short in time, only just over the hour mark in terms of its duration. No laugh out loud funny points for me, but none the less I am a huge fan of Zach Braff and thought it was good enough to watch once and then forget.

This film is a pretty lack lustre affair, that severely under-uses Braff's talents. It is fairly easy going and has some funny moments, but nothing truly gut busting. I struggle to write much more about it really! If you want a chilled out film, that doesn't take itself too seriously and don't mind a touch of Hollywood cheesiness, then this film should suit you fine. Good, but not great.

such a waste of talent

when you get a film that has zach braff of the brilliant scrubs in it along with jason bateman of the very good and certainly underrated series arrested development, then all the ingredients are in place to make a film that should be as good as it is funny, well thats what should have happened, sadly a poor script and jokes that sink with the force of the titanic make for a film that feels like a chore.
The film steals alot of its ideas from meet the parents in truth and cant even do that right,i have wasted enough of my time doing this review, all that i can say now is avoid, please avoid.

Cringe worthy, obvious and mild sums up the contents of this film. Tom is a new father who can't find his perfect job, whilst Sofia is his bored stay at home wife, who longs to return to work. Chip is 'The Ex' and complicates Tom's new job when they are set to work together on an account. Added to the mix are in-laws and slapstick jokes. The film flows quite well until the last fifteen minutes, which rush by thus making the film for couples rather than 'pure comedy seekers.' There are occasions to smile broadly however, the jokes are reminiscent of Scrubs, without the narrative. It fails in creating it's main goal of a pure comedy. Instead a soft romantic comedy flourishes, this is perhaps because of its obvious ending, which puts it in the category of films, such as 'I'm with Lucy.' This makes it ideal for a single viewing, with your partner, but more than once gives the film one credit too many.

Absolutely AWFUL!!!

I literally just popped out to the video store to get something light-hearted and humerous to help end the weekend off. There's not a lot of great comedy films out at the moment, and so I took a chance on the tag line which mooted it as being 'so funny you'll laugh unctrollably'.....whoever wrote that needs to never review a film again as it was so wide of the mark it's untrue. I didn't laugh ONCE. In fact I was cringing most of the time, and the rest of the time I was trying not to a)fall asleep or b) turn it off, take it back and demand my money back. This film is a poor mans Meet The Parents, and if forced, I'd rather have watched a repeat of that, than sit through The Ex....

The storyline was boring, the characters were dull and lacked any depth at all, and the gags were just rubbish. To cap it all, the ending was just there....you know what's going to happen, and it's just like, here you go....THE END....not funny....AT ALL! AVOID!
