crazy, colourful, hard to follow,,all terms read about this film prior to purchase..in my opinion these are all true, but this doesnt make it a bad film. Not all manga reveals itself at the first watch...fans of ghost in the shell could agree to that. The actual story is not too hard to follow, but because of the top quality animation and visual candy being thrown about,,dreams intermingling with reality,,then at first view you could miss some details. All in all i enjoyed this film and would recommend
it,,it reminded me of 'spirited away' crossed with 'ghost in the shell,,a futuristic sci fi cop show but with mad and colourful visuals...enjoy..I only marked it down as it might not be everyones cup of tea..

A compelling film about dreamsReview date: 2008-03-29 Rating: 10 out of 10I had some doubts about this film after reading some negative reviews, but my advice to you is ignore them this film is my favourate Kon film so far. The animation is stunning, a lot of anime has quite jumpy looking animation but this one is a definate exception.
The characters have been well explored and have very human characteristics. If you like anything from Ghibli to Akira im sure you'll love this film.
5/5A great rent or purchaseReview date: 2008-03-26 Rating: 8 out of 10I was extremely hesitant over watching Paprika. I don't like to be disappointed by hype and lowered my expectations accordingly. Thankfully Paprika was not the erratic disjointed hot mess that I was expecting.
To start with the soundtrack is amazing. I was obsessed as soon as I heard it. It's very uplifting and catchy. Watching Paprika glide through the skies to the music was very enjoyable.
Secondly, the story is quite easy to follow. There's a bit of technical jargon (something about a DC Mini which can transport you into someone's dreams) but you don't have to pay too much attention to know that basically dreams and reality are colliding and someone evil is responsible for it. I would say the plot is pitched at a more adult level rather than for children as there are subtle hints about relationships between characters that would fly over a child's head.
Thirdly, the quality of animation is superb. It may not have the scope and epic feel of a large budget Studio Ghibli film but it makes up for that in ingenuity and creative verve. The dream sequences are simply outstanding being alternately gorgeous and disturbing.
The plot does get a little crazy towards the end but it left me with the urge to watch the whole thing again and again. Paprika makes a great rent. I wouldn't buy it on a whim unless I had seen it first though as I feel the film may not be to everyone's taste. averageReview date: 2008-03-18 Rating: 6 out of 10This amimation was very average. The story ws disjointed and didn't really hold my interest. Maybe I just need to watch it again. Flawed masterpieceReview date: 2008-03-13 Rating: 8 out of 10At times visually amazing, but the typically Japanese illogical storyline gets in the way at times. worth a look if only for the graphics though
