From the creators of Animatrix comes this visually-stunning new anime film based on a popular Japanese manga written by Taiyo Matsumoto. In Treasure Town, where the moon smiles and young boys can fly, life can be both gentle and brutal. This is never truer than for our heroes, Black and White, two street urchins who watch over the city, doing battle with an array of old-world Yakuza and alien assassins vying to rule the decaying metropolis. Tekkonkinkreet is a dynamic tale of brotherhood that addresses the faults of present day society, true love lost, and the kindness of the human heart.
A brutal elegy for our changing times as well as a tour-de-force of visual artistry, Tekkonkinkreet is a deeply resonant story with a heart. The title Tekkonkinkreet is a play on the Japanese words for ‘concrete,’ ‘iron,’ and ‘muscle,’ and it suggests the warring images of steel and concrete cities amassing against the powers of the imagination. Until now, at least in imports abroad, anime style has almost entirely been characterised by wide-eyed heroes, big robots, and uninspired plotting. Tekkonkinkreet jettisons these stereotypes in favour of a more realistic, European ethos, successfully incorporating engaging child characters and a complex action plot into a poetic, engaging story.

i purchased this film because i enjoyed paprika, but this is a superior movie on all points..the artwork is lush, the animation is really good, and the story is very interesting. It deals with relationships in a very adult
way so its not for the younger viewer. The style of the film is a little of the wall at times but youll find yourself actually caring about the characters by the end...a modern day masterpiece.

FantasticReview date: 2008-03-18 Rating: 10 out of 10Is not the typical japanese style of animation but its great to watch. I loved the characters, the story was very touching and you feel for the characters. Really rather DisappointingReview date: 2008-02-27 Rating: 4 out of 10OK so it looks lovely (except the characters). All backgrounds, objects and effects look stunning and animate in a smooth and expensive fashion. Really beautiful to look at! The character designs are for the most part awful, really ugly! I kind of see the effect they were going for but it only works in a couple of scenes, for the most part it just put me off.
But the real problem with this film is the storyline. There isn't one! Or if there is only a fragment made it to disc.
I can't believe someone actually placed this above Paprika!?! Paprika was an excellent film! One of the very best ever made! I sat down to watch this film with a mate who was with me at the anime allnighter when we first saw Paprika. We were both utterly disappointed by this film. It totally failed to explain anything! Who were the bad guys? Where did they come from? Why were they doing what they were doing? And where did the elephant come from?!?
It's a long film and with the way the first half sets the scene and builds character rapport you find yourself expecting it to really go places. It doesn't. It goes precisely nowhere, slowly. At one point they even resort to a psychedelic light show that's probably supposed to convey some spiritual awakening (a la Evangellion ending), it's just bad story telling as far as I'm concerned.
Don't get me wrong there are some good scenes in this film and as I've already said it does look good, hence the 2 stars. But there's NO WAY this title is worth a 5 and ABSOLUTELY NO WAY it's better than Paprika!
To put this review in some context:
I find Ghost in the Shell (films and S.A.C.) consistent excellent. I still love Evangellion even though the end (all of them) is crap and useless. I love Cowboy Bebop and FLCL.
School Rumble is one of the funniest things I have ever watched and Death Note is probably the most intelligent story I've seen in anime or film.ReveiwReview date: 2008-02-20 Rating: 10 out of 10A Very Intresting Movie of light and darkness I Think they have done a realy good job of converting this from the managa to the anime dvd
Very Orginal, and i think its well worth to watch with slightly older children, also love the way the gangsters are animated and the ending was realy good as well.Worth watching!Review date: 2007-11-25 Rating: 10 out of 10Definately up there with other Anime greats. Very Japanese (brutal, violent - yet beautiful)way of story and animation. NOT for young kids. Incredible detail in everything, imaginative blend of styles.
