Fantastic stuff
Review date: 2007-11-27 Rating: 10 out of 10
I saw Heaven and Hell in Cardiff the other week and this is a nice "indirect" souvenir, as the stage set, performance and set list is exactly the same in this DVD.
I love the original Sabbath stuff, but I was struck how different this incarnation of Sabbath to the Ozzy line-up. Tony Iommi is a lot freer, and the up-tempo songs really chug along with more groove than on older Sabbath stuff. I suppose Ronnie being able to remember the words to the songs without autocue helps loosen things up a little too :-)
For a group of guys in their late 50s-early 60s they can still rock - Metallica take note!!!
I'm not sure what sets the £19 version apart from this £12 version - this cheaper DVD seems to have the same extras and is excellent value. The road-movie in the extras is interesting and worth a viewing.

At long last we get and proper tour and some amazing performances, this is the reunion of the year, sure Led Zeppelin are going to occupy more time on `Newsnight' but will they be able to perform this well? Will Van Halen be able to perform this well? The answer of course, is no.
Many fellow Sabbath fans know that Mr Iommi made a huge step back reuniting with Ozzy in a reunion which turned out to be a damp squib, with tens years of, wheel Ozzy out, play `paranoid', play `iron man', then bed and certainly nothing from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath! So then after ten bloody years of this with about two new songs and only a handful of UK gigs, we get Heaven and Hell *cough* Black Sabbath *cough* with Geezer (the only member of the original Sabbath other than Iommi who can still cut it), Vinny Appice and of course Ronnie James Dio, who have shown that they can not only cut it but they can absolutely destroy!
The performances here are staggering, the its hard to believe most of this band is in their 60's, surely not! Dio must have done some kind of Faustian pact to be singing this well at 65, none of the other singers still around from the 70's sing with the much power and emotion, it's absolutely phenomenal the man doesn't fluff a single note. Admittedly as with all singers he lost some range as he got older but its barely noticeable as Dio never sung high frequently with Sabbath, also the band has now tuned to D rather than E flat which is the tuning `Heaven and Hell' and `Mob Rules' were in but it makes absolutely no different to me. Dio's performance is particularly exemplary when compared to Ozzy's performances of late and quite frankly these days Ozzy couldn't carry a tune if you put a radio in a suitcase. Geezer once again proves himself as one of the finest bassist's in the whole rock genre he plays as good as he ever did, and the bass is perfect for the Sabbath sound deep, round and slightly distorted it's a massive improvement over his sound on say Dehumanizer, which was a bit to trebly. Vinny Appice pounds his drums of doom (sorry couldn't resist) he's playing better than ever, hard hitting and tight but never mechanical. I also found his drums on bungee ropes particularly entertaining. Iommi has lost none of his power and finesse with age and he plays much better than he did in the Ozzy reunion (well you put players with people who are performing better and they in turn better). So this is Iommi on godly form absolutely crushing riffs and face melting solos aplenty.
Production wise, I feared that this had came out so soon that it might be a bit muddy and a rushed job ala `Live Evil' but this is absolutely not the case it's crystal clear, heavy and loud. The mix is perfect too, every instrument is a the right level and never muddy. This is the best produced Sabbath live stuff outside of the 1970 Paris gig which probably wasn't produced but its just so bloody loud!
The set list here is excellent as well, a few minor gripes that they missed out a few of my favourites like `Over and Over', `Turn Up The Night', `Too Late' and `TV Crimes' but still this is a great crowd pleasing set. Performance wise non of these songs are in anyway shabby, Dio's voice never fails him and the band is really tight (especially when compared to recent performances with Ozzy, Bill Ward as much as I love him just can't play like he did in the 70's).
The extras here aren't the greatest and I would have loved for more in depth documentaries and such but what's there is good quality and you find out some interesting stuff such as how Vinny used Cozy's drums on the new recordings and said how he wanted to carry Cozy's spirit on (RIP Cozy, he couldn't half play and with feeling too) and Tony and Geezer having a good moan at the set lengths and lists they have been playing recently.
So if you've already seen this tour and want some nostalgia or if you want a taster of what's to come I can highly recommend this, it's a work of art and a master class in Heavy Metal and the performance blew me away and made me proud to be a Sabbath fan again. This mob rules!Review date: 2007-09-11 Rating: 10 out of 10Being the owner of a few less than flattering 'nostalgia rock' DVDs from heroes such as Blue Oyster Cult and The Tubes (oh Fee ... where did it all go wrong?), I questioned my motives for submitting my credit card details for another dust collector. I still felt uneasy when it arrived and I looked at the uninspiring cover - "Its only money" I said to myself. But it was money well spent.
I shall get my one gripe out of the way first in that E5150 doesn't link into Mob Rules which doesn't make sense to me as they are as inseparable as the Big Brother twins and After All is in a bit low a key for Dio's voice to shine from the start. But unlike many singers whose voice tires as the set goes on, Dio's just gets better and better! And what a set list ... its all here, brilliantly performed and with so much energy for a bunch of old geezers. Talking of geezer, Tony is in sparkling form, as is Ronnie and Vince, yet its Mr. Butler that steals the show. Vastly underrated (well by me anyway); his driving relentless bass runs copyrighting the term 'Heavy Metal' as his own. He is amazing to watch, but then so is the whole DVD.
By the time you get to Neon Knights (which brought back happy memories of a summer playing the single over and over again on the jukebox in Caister), you are left with a feeling of total fulfillment as if you were there and had a bloody good nights entertainment from a bunch of fossils that are old enough to be your grandfather!
So all you young rock and metal bands out there take note: buy this DVD and watch it over and over again. Learn from it.
THAT'S how you put on a show! The talent does not wither!Review date: 2007-09-10 Rating: 10 out of 10I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this film looks, sounds and how great the band perform. I only saw this band previously on the Black & Blue video from about 1980, and they are far better now! The band are in great shape and it is refreshing to hear these songs played again - and with so much passion. Dio is a phenominal singer, but it never sounded right him singing the "other" stuff. Rejoice in the fact that you won't have to hear/skip past "Paranoid" for the zillionth time!
Iommi is just incredible and continues to inspire with his ability. Vinnie Appice is also just so right for this material, and gets to let rip with a drum solo.
Well worth the money.
