Wonderful lyrics & music
Review date: 2007-12-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

Quite different from most previous work, especially the Dire Straits days, though there are at least a couple of tracks that could be on any DS album. For me it adds to my DS/MK collection and brings different things. If you like lyrics that tell stories & wonderful music then this is for you. A CD to listen to and relax with.
If you long for the DS days, then make sure you go to one of the concerts in 2008 - you will get Sultans, Brothers in Arms, R&J etc., as good as they have ever been but also some of the great solo stuff too.
Enjoy!!!!

Truly Ghastly
Review date: 2007-10-21 Rating: 2 out of 10

It is not that this effort is not up to scratch, or even bad - it is truly horrid. Anyone giving this 5 stars should be thought of as a desparate employee of Mercury's (maybe not, but I can think of no other charitable assessment).

I duly bought it - as I do all Knopfler's music (as well as collaborative efforts) - and gave it the required attention on the main hi-fi (his music tends to be so well-produced that iPods and the like do no justice). My negativity can hardly be blamed on the Reimyo Player and Escalante Design speakers - just the stale loaf coming out of them.

You see, I don't mind a bit of repetition and well-trodden guitar licks - it's usually so good that it is a pleasant reminder. This album, however, had me wondering whether or not to catalogue it, or save the typing and chuck it in the bin.

It is not even good enough for Asda to use as musak.

Still love Knopfler, though and all that he's done, but please don't kid yourself that there's anything here. There's simply nothing here to like at all and it is by far his most pointless effort to date. I cannot really critique any of the tracks as they are generally indistinguishable (and it is not worth the time and pain to untangle them).

No surround mix...bummer
Review date: 2007-10-20 Rating: 4 out of 10

Unlike the deluxe versions of Sailing to Philadelphia and Shangri-La, the DVD package here doesn't contain a surround mix, so warning, don't order it thinking it's included on the DVD menu. I didn't realize this before ordering. All you get is a documentary and not a DVD-audio version of the album. Boo hoo. My bad. P.S. Musically, Crimson doesn't have the muscle of MK's previous solo fare.

Haunting and evocative
Review date: 2007-10-17 Rating: 8 out of 10

Similar in style to Knopfler's 2002 album The Ragpicker's Dream and with echoes of his Local Hero soundtrack, Kill to Get Crimson is full of haunting melodies, silky guitar riffs and clever, acutely observed lyrics.

In particular I defy any male who was at senior school in the 60s or 70s to listen to the wonderfully evocative 'Secondary Waltz' without experiencing a pang of nostalgia.

If I could only own one Knopfler album it would still be Ragpicker's but this runs it a very close second.

Not quite crimson enough
Review date: 2007-10-16 Rating: 6 out of 10

I was truly disappointed by this CD. I found it very bland and boring and without the usual virtuoso guitar playing. Some tracks were o.k. but it's easy listening at the lowest common denominator and Mark seems to have lost his edge. Real woolly cardigan music!
