The resurrection!
Review date: 2008-06-15 Rating: 8 out of 10
The first episode on this DVD release (the 5th of the series) takes a break from the action of the previous four to concentrate on the relationship between the Sho and Tetsuro. Reflecting on the recent happenings and with glances at old family photographs, the episode successfully captures the melancholy it is after. Pretty soon after we are back to action with the return of Enzyme. I say 'return' but it's actually the first time Enzyme appears in this series, but if you've seen the previous incarnations of Guyver then you'll have been expecting the poison laden hairy beasty.
I don't want to say too much about the story at this point in case this is the first time you've experienced Guyver, but we get to see another example of the awesome power of the Guyver unit when it regenerates the host.
By the end of this DVD we are familiar with all aspects of the evil Cronos corporation and find out the awful truth behind the origins of the Zoanoids and humanity itself. We are nothing but the result of an ancient experiment, Tetsuro finds this difficult to deal with - but I suppose it's not nice to hear that the hideous monsters you're fighting are pretty much distant cousins!
We go from having three Guyver units to two in a thrilling episode to finish this DVD. Makishima, the third Guyver (sssssh, the main characters don't know it yet) will no doubt be the space to watch in upcoming episodes. Again the animation is superb and the high standards of the first four episodes are continued in these next four.
In a nutshell: The plethora of additional features found in the first DVD dwindles for the second DVD. If you like watching with an English dub then you'll enjoy the 5.1 surround sound, whereas the original Japanese soundtrack is presented in bog standard stereo. Overall not as great as the first DVD, but still very good.
