Great series, but...
Review date: 2008-04-19 Rating: 6 out of 10
No doubting the series is superb, but the picture quality on this release is pretty ropey - faded colours, dirt, grain and scratches throughout - not remastered at all and this often detracts from the enjoyment of what's on screen. A shame, as this series was shot on film as opposed to video so could look amazing. No extra material or remastering shows this was done on a shoestring budget, which is a shame.

Great Children's SeriesReview date: 2008-02-09 Rating: 10 out of 10What do you get. Great theme music, period atmosphere, appealing story lines, Judi Bowker; my childhood heroine & a clever horse who likes apples. Buy this & encourage them to release Series 2! If only childhood tv could ever be like this again !Black Beauty And FriendsReview date: 2008-02-03 Rating: 8 out of 10An ITV adaptation of the classic novel by Anna Sewell. The BLACK BEAUTY story is set in Victorian England and begins when widower Doctor James Gordon (William Lucas), his two teenage children and housekeeper Amy (Charlotte Mitchell) leave smog-ridden London for the tranquil and healthier environment of rural Hertfordshire. Episode 1 focuses on the Gordon youngsters Vicky and Kevin (Judi Bowker and Roderick Shaw) meeting with Beauty for the first time. In response to their concern over its health, the doctor duly attains ownership. Subsequent episodes are in the main acted at a gentile pace. With a recurring theme of the family and friends triumphing over adversity, helped in no small way by their beloved horse. The saga of BLACK BEAUTY reflects a time of Olde England when the British class system was very prominent. As some of the stories depicted.
Guest stars worthy of mention are too many to list individually but include John Thaw (Inspector Morse), John Nettles (Midsomer Murders), Geoffery Bayldon (Catweazle) and Peter Bowles (The Irish RM).
BLACK BEAUTY is quintissentially British. And very much an acquired taste. All 26 episodes originally aired in 1972 and 1973. Available here in a 4-disc box set. Highly recommended to fans of the family genre. Wow!!!
