Synopsis

Jam-packed with fighting sequences, this epic anime takes place in a fictional version of Tokyo, where humans and demons coexist. As the city's guardian, it is Karas's responsibility to keep all these different forces in balance. The task proves manageable enough until the power-hungry Eko intervenes--at Tokyo's expense, leading to an explosive battle that will decide the fate of mankind.

One of the best Anime films I seen in years
Review date: 2007-12-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

Karas the Revelation picks up straight after the Prophecy, as the story unfolds, we learn that Otoha who became Karas was apart of a criminal gang family and was seen as a demon of sorts by his family but he is no longer Karas because his Yurine has been captured (See Prophecy end for more details). Meantime Nue a proper demon in the form of a human after having his life saved by Otoha goes off on a mission to save his brother from Eko, while Otoha has gone to save the young man that was his friend before he went into a coma and became Karas. Unfortunately things don't go to plan for either of these characters both of them fail to save those who they care about.

After Nue's defeat and capture we learn Eko has a plan for Nue and his brother which goes into motion. Otoha after fail saving his friend is left wondering the streets until Eko's plan comes into motion.

The two Detectives and the actress from the first movie, along with a whole load of other people have taken shelter in underground shelter believing them selves safe when Eko's plan goes into motion but they weren't as safe as they thought because there's a demon waiting to eat them.

Overall this is a great movie, the story is much easier to understand then the Prophecy film, it has some great moments and a strong focus on Otoha, we learn who he is as a person before he became Karas and what Eko has in store for the city, if you like a anime movie with lots of blood, action and strong story, I recommend this one, the animation is beautiful and has good use of CGI with classic 2D animation.

Karas: The Revelation - a mild disappointment
Review date: 2007-11-17 Rating: 6 out of 10

The one memory I shall always have of Karas: The Prophecy is how utterly bewildered I was after finishing the first time. Several repeat-viewings later, I got my head around what was going on (due in no small part to subtitles and that nifty Japanese voice-track), and my interest in the belated sequel was peaked.

Alas, Karas: The Revelation did not play out as I'd hoped. It would seem the makers of Karas followed the trend set by the Matrix sequels. That is, the first half is so densely-packed, it takes multiple viewings or a certified expert's ramblings to understand. Whereas the second half dispenses what compelling narrative there is left in first half-hour, and then descends into an eye-pleasing but brainless fight-fest, with gore galore.

And thats just the problem with Karas: The Revelation. The opening scenes, mapping the past of Otoha and how he became the guardian spirit of Tokyo makes for compelling viewing, helped in part by a Kill Bill-esque bloodbaths. However, for remaining hour or so, the plot gives way to action, and I mean ALOT of action. I have seen alot of violent anime in my time, and I must say Kthis one ranks amongst the most violent.

With that taken into consideration, whether you'd enjoy Karas: The Revelation depends on how you like your anime. If ponderous and complex, then no. If brash and blood-soaked, then yes.

I for one found it to be disappointing. That said, in comparison with some of the anime on the market these days, Karas: The Revelation ranks as a better-than-average attempt.

Verdict: 3 stars ***
