Amazon.co.uk Review

Serenity is a film that, by rights, shouldn’t have been made. For starters, it’s spun out of the short-lived and quickly-cancelled TV series Firefly, which has only itself got the full recognition it deserves on DVD. It then marries up two seemingly incompatible genres, the western and science fiction, has no major stars to speak of, and pretty much has ‘hard sell’ written all over it.

Perhaps that explains its modest box office performance back in 2005. What it fails to reflect, however, is that this is one of the most energetic, downright enjoyable sci-fi flicks in some time. Not for nothing did many rate it higher than the Star Wars movie that appeared in the same year.

It follows renegade captain Mal Reynolds and his quirkily assembled crew, as they work on the outskirts of space, trying to keep out of the way of the governing Alliance. That plan quickly changes when they take on a couple of passengers who have attracted the attention of said Alliance, and thus the scene is set for an action-packed, cleverly written movie that deserves many of the plaudits that have rightly been thrust in its direction.

What’s more, Serenity works whether you’ve seen the TV series that precedes it or not. Clearly fans of the Firefly show will be in their element, but even the casual viewer will find an immense amount to enjoy.

The only real problem is that given the film’s box office returns, further adventures of Reynolds and his crew look unlikely. Unless Serenity turns into a major hit on DVD, that is. It’s well worth playing your part in making that happen.--Simon Brew

Clever!
Review date: 2008-11-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

This ranks with Alien and Bladerunner. It's clever, funny, has believable characters and is well plotted. I can't believe ppl find it difficult.
It just gets better with each viewing.

Absolutely Great Film!
Review date: 2008-10-14 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a great sci-fi film. Think Indiana Jones in Space or What Han Solo's life would've been like before taking Luke and Obi-Wan on board. I agree that watching Firefly first is a must as you then get to know and care about all of the characters which only adds to the experience. It's very witty, clever, got great characters, and a good story. Give it a go. You'll love it!!

Take note mr. Lucas

George Lucas should watch this movie so he can learn how a space saga should be done these days.

Don't get me wrong, i love the original Star Wars movies as much as the next fan, but Serenity works on so many levels, its sci-fi, comedy, drama & horror all rolled into one and makes the star wars prequels look like rubbish.

Unlike some movies that are born from a T.V. series, Serenity does'nt play like an extended episode of its T.V. predecessor (Firefly) Even if you've never seen Firefly (shame on you) it's very easy to pick up the story from the start.

The direction is faultless, the actors know their characters so well, and considering it's budget the films special effects look fantastic.

The extras, although a little thin for my liking, still provide some great entertainment, Nathan Fillion who plays Capt. Mal Reynolds is just hilarious and Joss Whedons passion for this project is boundless.

Even if your not a big sci-fi fan, or if you are and were disappointed by the Star Wars prequels or the Star Trek movies or even loved them all, then i think you would love this film.

Great story, great cast (who should all be more famous than they are) and great fun, what more do you need?

Amazing Film
Review date: 2008-09-22 Rating: 10 out of 10

I love this film!
I watched it before watching firefly and even then loved it and thought it was one of the funniest, most gripping film I've seen in a long time.
After watching firefly I liked it even more.
I would definitely recommend watching firefly first but even if you don't Serenity is still worth watching.
I did feel that there were a few things that weren't consistent with the t.v show but that didn't ruin it too much for me.

Definitely biased review

Loved the Firefly series, love this film. There is a good story-line, a decent musical back track, action, humour, some shocks and a swift but proper resolution to the film. Want another one please.
