For it?s the outstanding cast, clearly having a ball here, that make New Tricks quite so much fun. This fourth series sees the trio of mismatched detectives--once more working for Amanda Redman--solving crimes and generating many laughs as they do so. Their methods are inevitably more towards the old school, and this inevitably brings them into conflict with the generation that followed them, but this just adds to the fun. Throw in a host of welcome famous faces in cameo roles, and it feels like a piece of television where good storytelling and strong production values sit above gimmicks and whizzbang special effects. The pace of New Tricks may not immediately endear it to the CSI generation, but for many, that?s part of the appeal. That, and the quality of writing and the chance to enjoy good actors playing the kind of good roles that you?d thought had long since dried up. More of the same please, BBC. --Jon Foster

There are more cases to solve, and there?s a lot more entertainment to enjoy as the supposedly-retired crime-fighting team of Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong knuckle down to business once more. And as they do so, New Tricks proves that if you want consistent quality, you need to turn to the old pros.
Fantastic show finally makes it across the Pond.

Here in the States, only a few Public Broadcasting stations show New Tricks on their Friday mystery nights. Luckily, San Jose, which serves San Francisco, is one of them. In my opinion, next to Inspector Morse, New Tricks is the best mystery show to come out of the UK. The acting and writing is superb, the cast is so compatible, I wonder if they have to pay them to act together. The plots are interesting and the mixture of humor, pathos, serious topics and straight drama is a mixture that must have been concocted by a genius. Amanada Redman proves that sexy and clever comes in many packages and her ability to work with the cast of characters in her unit are most admirable.Unfortunately, all DVD's available here are only for Region 2 so they don't play very well on Region 1 equipment. Based on New Tricks, I'm buying a universal player just so I can get your newest videos. What a great show. Too bad our hacks over here think that car chases, explosions and implied sexual situations translates into "good writing". Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.
