Amazon.co.uk Review

Con Air is proof that the slick, absurdly overblown action formula of Hollywood mega-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, The Rock) lives on, even after Simpson's druggy death. (Read Charles Fleming's exposé, High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Culture of Excess, for more about that). Nicolas Cage, sporting a disconcerting mane of hair, is a wrongly convicted prisoner on a transport plane with a bunch of infamously psychopathic criminals, including head creep Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich), black militant Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames), and serial killer Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi, making the most of his pallid, rodent-like qualities). Naturally, the convicts take over the plane; meanwhile, on the ground, a US marshal (John Cusack)and a DEA agent (Colm Meaney), try to figure out what to do. As is the postmodern way, the movie displays a self-consciously ironic awareness that its story and characters are really just excuses for a high-tech cinematic thrill ride. Best idea: the filmmakers persuaded the owners of the legendary Sands Hotel in Las Vegas to let them help out with the structure's demolition by crashing their plane into it. --Jim Emerson

Still great after all these years
Review date: 2008-10-21 Rating: 8 out of 10

After buying my Panasonic Blu Ray player I was eager to watch a movie giving me the full HD effect. I thought Con Air was maybe a bit too old to provide the best quality but I was rewarded with a fantastic and stunning sharpness and images. Con Air might be a movie for the devoted fan, it is defintely one of my favourites, but Blu Ray took it further and made the movie as exciting as fresh as when I first saw it all those years ago. Great action , great dialog and cliched, but worth every minute.

Worthy Upgrade to Hi-Def
Review date: 2008-02-22 Rating: 10 out of 10

We all know the film and how great it is if you like that kind of thing (I surely do), but is it worth buying the Blu-Ray version? I would say definitely yes, as the picture is so clear as to it being difficult to imagine it being any better, and the uncompressed HD sound is pretty awesome on my half-decent system. As for the film, I hadn't seen it for a few years and it's still one of my favourites. There's a lot of humour, scarey but likeable characters and stupendous action. Who cares if it's not realistic or believable, it's still a bl**dy good action film that could stand up to anything on the go even now.

Sunday morning ironing film
Review date: 2008-01-09 Rating: 2 out of 10

This movie was playing whilst I tackled a huge pile of ironing and if it wasn't for me having to keep taking my eyes off the screen to do something else, I would have rejected it from the DVD much sooner. It is so far fetched it makes Back To The Future look like a documentary. I was laughing out loud at the lines, the attempt at the James Dean furrowed brow hammy acting by Cage, the slug-out hot n sweaty fight scenes that would have rendered anyone else unconscious. The stereo-typical characters had me laughing too. The whole thing was interjected with obligatory fire and explosions, so set-up they are comedic. When it, at last, got near to the end and I found I had correctly predicted out loud what the final scenes would be, it was confirmation who this film is aimed at and I switched it off. This is a film that ticks all the boxes in terms of the must have list, Must have fight scences, must have lots of explosions, must have a storyline an amoeba could understand, must have sentimental bit, must include tug-at-your-heartstrings child included storyline. Must get a life and not this film! It is an insult to your intelligence.

4 star movie, 3 star Blu-Ray
Review date: 2007-08-30 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is a far-fetched but very entertaining convict escape movie. It is well covered by Amazon reviews in the standard definition DVD section. The blu-ray version does look better than the SD one but not greatly so. It lacks the "wow factor" of "Black Hawk Down" or "Starship Troopers". Get this to enjoy the movie rather than to be impressed by stunning visuals.
