easy-to-watch teen movie
Review date: 2008-05-28 Rating: 6 out of 10

okay, a fair cast - the duff sisters look really good in this film, but it's not going to be one of those movies that stays in your mind for ages after and you cant wait to rush out and buy it. it's a bubbly teen movie which was easy to watch and doesnt require huge amounts of attention to detail - some laughs, generally light-hearted, but would go on the shelf next to sabrina the teenage witch sort of thing.

easy to watch but not an earth -shatterer
Review date: 2007-11-13 Rating: 6 out of 10

This film is okay if you want to relax and watch something easy to follow.
But don't expect any great surprises, good jokes,or a particularly interesting storyline.I mainly bought it to see the Duff sisters acting together which I suppose is what the marketing people were hoping!

complete rubbish!
Review date: 2007-11-10 Rating: 2 out of 10

god what a waste of £7! it was so plastic (some plastic movies are good but not this) i think the whole reason why this movie sucked so bad was that haylie duff can't act to save her life (plus shes ugly). the whole time she is stealing the limelight from hilary duff.

it was so unrealistic ; they were supposed to have lost all their money, and yet they still had perfect hair and everything. also, when they WERE rich, i would have thought they would have a better looking house - it was all dark and no girly stuff in it.

overall it was crap. i bought it thinking that i was going to enjoy a cute chick flick film, but no i didnt, i can't believe i actually watched it all.

hilarys getting a little boring now
Review date: 2007-10-08 Rating: 4 out of 10

a huge dissapointement! with the fact that hilary hasnt been i a film since her recent waitloss and her singing career kicking off i thought that her acting would have grown up alot more considering the role she plays in material girls compared to her past roles. but unfortunatly not, it seems her appearance has but she still manages to act as the innocent little goody two shoes even as a spoilt brat.

Vapid Rubbish
Review date: 2007-07-10 Rating: 2 out of 10

A tiresome, vapid motion picture telling of a couple of shallow, vapid sisters doesn't make for enriching viewing. Proof-positive of such a notion is 2007's "Material Girls", which doesn't once capture the audience's interest or attention. Matter of fact, the littlest, most insignificant things will distract you while 'trying' to focus on this stale waste of time and space. Not surprising is it that "Material Girls" has arrived on British shores with a negative stigma surrounding it, not only boasting the worst movie poster of 2006 in its native US (according to the Internet Movie Poster Awards website) but also boasting an overwhelming string of hate-filled reviews that served to make it one of 2006's worst-reviewed films. Is it among the absolute worst pictures of the year, then? Not quite, with offerings such as the even more vapid "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and the more recent "Are We Done Yet?" and "Rest Stop" surpassing "Material Girls" in sheer awfulness (as well as many others). Still, "Material Girls" is a chore to watch, bland and uninteresting from the very beginning.

Joining Hilary Duff on-screen in this tween-targeted genre addition is her older sister Haylie Duff. The two play rich heiresses Tanzie and Ava Marchetta respectively, with the duo very much in the vain of real-life counterpart socialites Paris and Nicky Hilton. When a publicity scandal reveals information about dangerous side-effects to one of their father's company products -- the said side-effect being severe skin damage -- the two find themselves penniless suddenly and swiftly. To make matters worse, the two accidentally burn down their mansion in a careless accident. So, without a home and without a cent, the two socialites must try to cope with life in the real world, free of the safety and financial stability their previous lifestyle afforded them. Cue innumerable fish-out-of-water jokes and weak satirical pokes at the modern world's celebrity-obsessed culture.

Hilary Duff is passable enough as an actress, and I simply cannot agree with those that have previously announced her to be one in a line of talentless young actresses. In actual fact, Hilary oozes charisma and sweetness whenever on-screen. Alas, her choice in roles isn't nearly as highbrow as it could be. Duff has blamed such choices on satisfying her tween audience, who look up to her as a positive rolemodel. However, even such avid followers of the skilled actress will likely see "Material Girls" for the pointless turd it ultimately is, feeling let down by Hilary's choice and, perhaps, even wishing she'd take some of the serious roles that purportedly have came her way. Similar things cannot be said for older sister Haylie, who posesses absolutely zero charisma and flair of her younger, infinitely more talented sibling. I could describe some of the supporting roles, but such an endeavour would be pointless, with the majority of supporting characters horrendously underwritten and thereby irrelevant mixed in with characters so annoying that they don't warrant mention whatsoever.

Based upon the Madonna track 'Material Girl', creativity and ingenuity is totally absent with regards to "Material Girls". When a motion picture is actually based upon a song, one knows that chances are relatively high that the following movie will be a dud of epic proportions. Such is the case with this Hilary and Haylie Duff vehicle, unashamedly inept from the very start of proceedings. That we're supposed to warm to a couple of empty-headed, shallow, spoilt-rotten brats who even turn down the chance to regain at least some of their former wealth at one point defies belief. As the supposed protagonists, Tanzie and Ava aren't written well enough by screenwriters John Quaintance and Jessica O'Toole for viewers to forgive their lack of likeable character.

"Material Girls" has found its way into the Internet Movie Database's (imdb.com) bottom 100, a title that it doesn't deserve (currently, it's placed #54). Rated at an average of 2.3, the movie is that bad from a technical standpoint but there are plenty of other movies that deserve even lower ratings, more than a hundred guaranteed. "Material Girls" never qualifies as unabashedly good in any respect, but doesn't equal the categorically awful movies that thus far have been the only zero-star encounters of 2007 (those being "The Butterfly Effect 2", "Epic Movie" and "Saddam's Tribe").

Lackin inspiration and wit, "Material Girls" is a totally inept motion picture both as a comedy and as a forgettable family outing. Really bad with few saving graces, "Material Girls" is destines to evaporate from the memory rapidly. That, however, is only a blessing.
