Fantastic memories from a 1960's childhood..
Review date: 2008-05-27 Rating: 10 out of 10
For anyone who was a child of the 1960's or early 70's, this will surely bring back many memories and is an absolute must! I've been watching the DVD series with my own daughters (aged 9 and 7). Despite down-playing expectations in advance - it's in black and white, a bit crackly and very tame compared with today's TV - they absolutely love it. Very educational too - asking them what THEY would do in his situation (seek water, food, shelter etc.). We're watching one episode a day (I had to wait a full week for the next episode in 1965!). The music is on my ipod and I never walk on a deserted beach without the tunes in my head. Wonderful! Tim.

The Adventures of Robinson CrusoeReview date: 2008-05-09 Rating: 10 out of 10Hi, from Wellington N.Z. I first saw this film at a Wellington cinema sometime during the "Sixties", the theme tune from which has haunted me over the intervening years. And, yes, I remembered what the music was from, but not the name of it or who composed it. I recently heard it on Radio N.Z.'s classical music station, Concert FM, but missed what the announcer said it was. However, I recognised it immediately as having come from the film adaption of Defoe's novel that I had seen. It was hearing this that prompted me to search for it and am really enjoying it not having seen it for over forty years. I wrote to Amazon recently to say that I thought it possibly wasn't the one I remembered due to the theme of the one I saw previously having become so ingrained in my memory. Although the DVD I purchased is a copy of a tv series and not the original movie that I saw, I am really enjoying it. If I ever did come across the version I remember and it is different from the one I purchased, then I will purchase that one too. Finally I will see the end. . .Review date: 2008-04-24 Rating: 8 out of 10I cant imagine anybody in my generation who didn't watch this show when it was on TV. It seemed to be on every night for ever. The soundtrack is as remarkable as the show itself.
I first came across the VHS version of this programm about 5 years ago. Then it was a real struggle to collect all 4 tapes. Single tapes were trading at £30.00 upwards. I sold my complete collection at over £200.00 on ebay.
Happy therfore to find this official releaae on DVD. As previously stated it would have been nice if time and effort had been spent on restoration.
Laurel and Hardry was mentioned, I think lessons could also have been learned from the BBC Doctor Who Restoration Team who have performed wonders.
That said it is timeless entertainment. Even my 14 year old son is happy to enjoy it.
And despite all the times I watched it during my youth and beyond, I might now actually get to see how it ended. Well worth a purchase. The Adventures of Robinson CrusoeReview date: 2008-04-15 Rating: 8 out of 10Although The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe was on British TV from 1965,I first saw it at the age of 6 in 1971.Even at that young age,it made an impact on me,so when I heard it was coming out on Dvd,I couldn't wait.First let's get the bad points out of the way,as a few reviewers have already mentioned, the print is "grainy" at times and really,a bit of money could have been thrown at this release to enhance its presentation. Some more extras would have been nice, such as info on all the actors, film crew etc, maybe a few photos showing the island in the present and yes I know that there is a town there now where it was filmed. One intriging thing about the extras was the colour photos,in which I saw pictures of scenes and characters not in the filmed version ie:there seems to be a scene showing Robinson help a friend to elope, does this mean that there are deleted scenes somewhere?.Grumble over, this was a joy to watch storywise. This is the definitive version,as I watched it,so many memories came back, the great music, one of the best ever soundtracks to a tv series, moves you and thrills you depending on the action. As an adult,I could appreciate Robert Hoffman's acting more.As he is dubbed,Robert acts with his body and face to tell the story effectively. He will always be remembered by many generations for this portrayal.I also for the first time realised how good that Lee Payant's commentary is,his voice gives the story its soul to Hoffman's heart. The story might not appeal to many of today's children which is a pity but it will live long in the memories of those lucky to have seen it.The only other bad thing was that where once it took a summer to watch the story,I now had watched it in a weekend and my adventure was over.Maybe as Robinson Crusoe says at the end "one day,I will return to my island".Maybe next year I'll return. This is it! The definitive small screen Crusoe series.Review date: 2008-03-13 Rating: 10 out of 10For anyone looking for the definitive small screen version of Robinson Crusoe, this is it! Have no doubts, this is the real McCoy, never to be forgotten. I have seen many other adaptations in film and series, but nothing can touch the English version of Robert Hoffmans classic. It simply is captivating! Once you have seen this, all other attempts at recreating the Robinson Crusoe adventure on the small screen pale into complete insignificance. Not only are you left on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next at the end of each episode, but the music, the story, the acting, the location, and even the fact that it is in black and white adds to its charm. You almost feel like you are there with Robinson! I would even hazard a guess too that it is just as popular today with kids as a series as it was with me when I was a young lad. Whenever anyone asks me about Robinson Crusoe, this series instantly pops up in my head! Heaven knows how it was almost lost forever at one time, because everyone I know who saw this series as a youngster absolutely loved it. It always brings back memories of my past youth when I watch it today, and is just as enjoyable as it was back then. I hope that everyone else who buys this DVD experiences the same feelings too. A true classic, and the very best!
